    ebay - misguided rules

I recently posted a 10 round magazine for an SP2022 on ebay, thinking that it meets all of their rules and requirements as strict as they are.

My auction was quickly ended wihe the following:

    From: ended@ebay.com [mailto:ended@ebay.com]
    Sent: Thursday, April 21, 2011 6:31 AM
Subject: MC036 eBay Listing Removed: Firearms, Weapons, and Knives (467778664

Unfortunately, we had to remove your listing because the following information violates our policy:

You listed a Sigarms Sig Pro SP2022 40sw 357Sig Magazine 10Rd, we consider this item to be essential to the firing of a weapon. While all parts of a gun are required for it to function properly, the "essential" parts are generally required for the shooting of a projectile. We understand your frustration that you may not have been aware of this policy. We've decided that some firearm parts are not right for our marketplace or our business. You can still purchase these items from other businesses in the U.S. Please do not relist this item on our site.

We don't allow the sale of most types of firearms and firearm-related items, including:
    - Ammunition
    - Firearms
    - Flares, flare launchers, or flare guns
    - Kits for building firearms
    - Parts or accessories that allow guns to fire

My response back to ebay was:

I'm sorry you feel this way - Unfortunately - your lack of understanding in this matter is evident as a magazine is merely a means of "holding" ammunition - It is evident in the State of California that the State believes that a magazine is not required to allow a gun to fire. I say this because with each handgun sold in California, the buyer is required to pass a safe handling test.

The California Safe Handling Test is designed to illustrate exactly that - that the handgun is very capable of being fired with no magazine present - thus meeting your requirements stated below

Please see the excerpt below from the State of California Handgun Safety Certificate Manual - Pg. 19

IX Visually inspect the chamber to reveal that a round can be chambered with the magazine removed.

As a longtime friend and supporter of ebay, I hope you will re-consider your position in this matter as it is well within your guidelines according to the State of California

    Sincerely,

We'll see what they say - probably a nogo - but gotta make your case!

Yeah um, Ebay/ Paypal are generally NOT your friends for anything even remotely firearm related. Treat them accordingly.

you can thank the VT shooter for this,

On July 30, 2007, after it came to light that Seung-Hui Cho had purchased on eBay two 10-round magazines for one of the guns used in the shootings, the online auctioneer prohibited the sale of firearms magazines, firearms parts, and ammunition components on its site.[102][103]

Good luck. People have been trying to sell magazines for years. The ones who fight usually get banned. Try Gun Broker instead.

Don't hold your breath waiting for a response.

Ebay only hire people to work their customer service desks who are able to cut and paste from standard form letters then move on to the next enquiry, not people are able to think, attempt to understand, or exercise logic to any questions posed by the customer. Trying to deal with Ebay customer service has been one of the most futile things I have ever attempted to do.

Sometimes you just have to take a stand - futile or not.

Ignorance in any form is just irritating - this certainly is as ignorant as it gets.

Yes I have been on Gunbroker for years and will probably post there.

I could care less if I sell the mags (I have about 6 extras) - it's just the principle.

Just had to vent with people who think like I do!

Nope, no firearms related sales. But tons of porn available on eBay.

Then why does E-Bay sell ammo containers? I've picked up several caliber containers to hold ammo, isn't that part of allows guns to fire? Dumb double standard - oh well!

I had a bid in on a sling for a Mosin. Ebay sent me an email that said the auction had been canceled because the item was prohibited and then provided links to similar items that I might be interested in. Three of the five similar items were the same sling from the same seller (they had multiple slings for sale.)

I emailed Ebay customer service to point out the absurdity of the situation and got a reply that indicated that the representative either didn't read my email or didn't know what to say.
