Yes, some ranges have policies against steel core ammo. If it doesn't attract a magnet you are usually good to go.

Generally FMJ is what all ranges prefer.

If the bullet doesn't attract a magnet you are good to go.

Magnetic does not mean steel core. Lead core does not mean non-magnetic.

Brown Bear 7.62x54R ammo uses steel jacketed projectiles which do attract a magnet. Most outdoor ranges in southern California don't allow it because of the fire risk. Most ranges in northern California do allow it. I'm not sure about the Manteca Sportsmen's range though. Give them a call and ask them if they have any restrictions on ammo that attracts a magnet.

Surprising, thought most ranges preffered FMJ

Most ranges do prefer FMJ. But most ranges in southern California and a few in northern California require FMJ that does not have any steel in the projectiles.

Come on down to the SLOSA range in San Luis Obispo. We don't care what you shoot here......as long as it's not me

When's the last time the range police asked to see if your ammo was magnetic? For me, never. Shoot away, nobody is gonna know.

and then be the douche that lights the range on fire and make the range get shutdown forever thus limiting our already small choice of outdoor ranges to goto.

Or be the douche that starts a fire and gets fined tens of thousands of dollars for burning down 30 homes...

...The fire burned 34,000 acres and destroyed 100 outbuildings in addition to the 30 homes before crews finally controlled it in early August. Thirty-eight injuries were reported, all of them minor, and the state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection estimated the cost of putting out the fire at $37.6 million.

Mosher said he hadn't realized he was using steel-jacketed bullets rather than ammunition with copper jackets, and investigators believe him, Brown said.

"He said he knew steel core ammunition could start a fire and he had some of that, but he kept it separate from the rest of his ammunition," Brown said.

Brown warned target shooters to test their ammunition with a magnet. "If it's attracted to a magnet, do not use the ammunition," the prosecutor said.
Many Calgunners have reported that SoCal ranges check all ammo with a magnet and kick out any shooters who try to sneak in steel jacketed ammo. Some Calgunners have also reported accidently starting fires when their steel jacketed ammo sparked on something downrange.

The Angeles Range has a small magnet glued to each concrete shooting bench. They have never asked me to test ammo on it but I have seen others asked.
