Places to shoot near Twain Harte, CA

My parents recently got a house in Twain Harte and I was wondering if anyone knows a place to shoot out there? I'm wondering if there's a place outdoor in the hills I can go check out?

Us city boys aren't used to a lot of green stuff.. Haha

Get a Stanislaus Forest Service map. Go south at Long Barn until you cross the Tuolumne River, then where ever it's safe. Try going up any dead end road. PAX

I'm in Sugarpine and I'd like to know this too. I'm rarely here long enough to go shooting but I may find time this summer.

So basically find a safe/good area in the Stanislaus Forest?

Yes anywhere safe in Stanislaus Forest. I have been shooting there since the 1970's Just make sure you have an updated forest service map. Stop by the ranger station to check out current road conditions, logging, fires, closures etc... For me the higher the better.

It's about halfway down Big Hill road, on the right if you are heading toward Columbia from Twain Harte. If you pass the mill and start heading downhill, you've gone too far. It is right next to the road, there is a wide pull out to the right, then a berm, then nice amphitheater of clay cliffs enclosing the shooting spot. Please pick up after yourself and also grab as much of other people's trash as you can: they closed the range down in the past due to excessive trash.
When you say open, but clean up after others I get the impression people come and go with no supervision there. Am I wrong?

Cool, I was looking at Google maps last night and the house is under 10 miles away from the forest. I'm going to look more at roads up there when I get a chance.

This is correct. The "range" on Big Hill Road is a little too close to the road for my tastes. If I were in your situation, I would try and find a place further up the hill in the national forest.

If that's the place I'm thinking of I would not shoot there. Too close to the county road for me. No supervision.

Ok, ya I don't know if I want to go to that place then . I might drive by and check it out though. Is it on forest land? That's probably why people go shoot there?

It's on BLM land I believe. Yes, it is right next to the road, and unsupervised, and the locals are hardcore inbred hillbillies, but shoot away from the road into the hillside, don't dress fancy and clean up after yourself and you'll be fine. The road isn't that heavily traveled, and those that use the road are used to occasional gunfire coming from the pit.

Oh, and if Sierra Glenn is open when you're out there, stop by and get some yummy baked goods and cider.

Also, carry a banjo and the locals will all like you.

He said BLM. For you, from Twain Hart, Big Hill is just as far, if not further than open forest near you. There are places very close to your location, the road to Mt. Provo is the closest, 2 or 3 miles. Call the Forest Service in Me-wok and ask them for a place to shoot. Once again, get a map. PAX

P.S. A lot of cranksters around Big Hill..FYI
