    .30 M1-Carbine for SKS?

    Hello Calgunners!

Let me start off by saying I'm new to the forum and wasn't quite sure of where to post this.So forgive me if this is not the right place.

I recently fell in love with an SKS my buddy had let me shoot and have been eye balling the ones in Big 5 for some time now.

The only dilemma is that with the economy being how it is and work being slow I'm short on the funds to go buy a new gun to add to the arsenal. I do however have a few guns I wouldn't mind parting with, in exchange for my new found love(SKS) The one I figured that would be a good trade for the SKS is a VERY clean Universal M1-Carbine with 2 10 rnd. Mags. A decent scope, and the scope attachment.100 or so rounds also.

Long story short, would any of you out there be willing to trade fo an SKS?
And to ask other users, would it be fair for BOTH parties if it were to happen. As far as price, value etc. etc.

I would love to hear from you, fell free to Email me or send me a PM on here.

    Thanks and Godbless!

I agree with this calgunner. Though I should say right from the get-go I am biased... I like the SKS, and despise the M1 carbine. I'd trade regardless. Speaking from a monetary standpoint though, I would do a bit of research and who knows, you guys are buddies, don't bring money into it, try to get him to give you a buncha ammo for it with it or something.

Negative. Universal M1 Carbines have a mixed history. They are hit or miss on the quality level.

No offense intended to the OP, but it is more likely than not that you will have to part with some cash if you can find someone willing to trade. That being said, this probably belongs in the Marketplace forum.

          Thanks for the help all.
Maybe I'll re-post in the Marketplace and see if I get anyone who wants to trade.

To hit on what Jaq said

I honestly have to agree with you that some are not high quality. However in my case, my carbine has shown to be 'tits'. It has pumped every ammo flawlessly through it from American Eagle, Lakecity to TulaAmmo and Wolf.

This is not to say I have not shot troubled M1 carbines. I can however tell you that 98% of the problems are directly attributed to the gas chamber/Short stroke being dirty since most people don't have the special wrench to clean it.

I have a yugo sks, and love the thing. Shoots great, and is very relieable. Eats anything i feed it including cheap wolf ammo which is what i stockpiled anyways lol. Good luck on your search, you won't regret the trade. SKS is by far a more practical weapon and fun to shoot, easy to clean.

Whaaaa?? Why do you despise M1's?? Perhaps you've never shot a well-maintained USGI M1 Carbine? It's a fantastic self-defense and home-defense weapon, effective range 300 yards, designed to be a 4 MOA rifle. It's got about the same energy as the .223 cartridge but a heavier bullet and poorer-performing external ballistics. I could go on gushing but I think you get the point... - the M1 Carbine was the first gun I ever owned and spent any time reading and learning about. It was my grandfather's, who carried it in the war.

Mine was manufactured by Underwood (one of the highest quality production out of the 10 contractors) in 1944 and is all original parts. I've put thousands of rounds through it and never had a misfire. It's also a great gun for introducing people to shooting.

Ok.. I hope I convinced you to give it a second chance... now to actually respond to the OP!

Universal M1 Carbines have a very bad rep. I think they all have chrome-lined barrels, which some go so far as to consider it to make the M1 Carbine unsafe to shoot. USGI M1 Carbine parts are plentiful, but you cannot use them in a Universal. They are made with lower quality steel and wood than USGI as well.

All that being said, I think they go for between $400 and $650. If I were you I would do a little research, try to sell yours on the upper end of that scale (especially since you've got the scope).

And you probably know this, but .30 Carbine is extremely expensive right now. I can usually get it online for around $20/50rnd boxes, but that's only while AIMSURPLUS carries it. I've seen it for as much as $48/50rnd boxes at local gun shops, for winchester. My point is you could sweeten up the deal with some ammo with a perspective buyer. Good luck!

by the time they have them in stock, you'll probably have the money together.
This is what I was thinking from the very beginning! Why stop at an SKS when you know it's only going to make you want an AK

Because they are two entirely different rifles that fulfill different purposes. One is capable of precision long-range shooting. The other isn't. Both are fun!!

I'm not sure either the SKS or AK fit that description.

Ok, I admit I'm not anywhere near an expert in SKS knowledge, but I've read about some Yugo SKSs that turned out to be extremely accurate, ~ 1 MOA. I don't know a lot about the 7.62x39 cartridge, I don't know what it's external ballistics are like or how far it can hold it's accuracy. I DO know however that the AK was not designed to be anything but a close-mid range weapon. The gas system itself tweaks the gun when fired, producing an unreliable POI.

All that being said, my original point stands, they are two different rifles designed to do two different things. So probably the best thing would be to just buy both

Universal M1 Carbines are properly named, because they are Universally garbage. Saying they are hit and miss is just a nice way of putting it.

I've owned a lot, and I mean a LOT of Carbines over the years. The USGI ones are awesome, but the commercial ones aren't worth a bucket of oily rags.
