    Buying a new rifle

    I got a $1000 to spend on a rifle, looking for a 308 bolt action. Please need your input and info what to buy. Pictures would be nice too.

    Thanks

    Do you have a scope to put on it already? If not expect to spend 500-600 on the rifle and another 400-500 on the glass(don't forget the cost of the mount also).

    edit: Now if you were looking to just spend $1000 on the rifle, forgot about the scope, and now realize you need to buy a cheaper rifle, there's still a plethora of options. Weatherby, Howa, Tikka, Remington, Savage, Mossberg, Ruger, etc. all have reasonably priced .308's without being low-end crap(like remington 770's, savage axis/edge/whatever-they-wanna-call-it) in a multitude of configurations including lighter weight adjustable triggers, freefloat(or close to it with some work on the stock) barrels, detachable mags, wood or synthetic stocks(well, the wood ones usually cost a little more), stainless or blued, and so on.

      MSRP = $995

      *I don't know anything about them, just seem like a great concept. I like .308. Basically I want a bunch of people to buy them, try them, and let me know if I should get one.

      You should probably include your intentions for the rifle... so folks can be more specific.

        Remington 700, and you wont be disappointed. I promise you. I have had several 700's over the years and imho they are the best. I have owned a Mauser in .243 Roberts, Ackley improved, a newer weatherby and a ruger. I like them all but I'd only buy a new 700.

        As a side note though, savages are great value for money.

          Savage 10XP Predator package rifle. Have your FFL order it in .308.

          Rifle and scope for well under $1000

            +1

            I have a lot of bolt actions (mausers, mosins, rugers, CZ, Marlin) and have shot many others (Savage, winchester, custom) and I have to say, the remington 700 is top notch.

            Only mods are bolt handle, and a bedding job. Factory X trigger tuned to 2.25 lbs.

              I own many different brands and all are good. But now I would buy a Tikka as I have done for the last two rifles I bought. If not a Tikka then I would get a Savage(I got a 204 in a varmit rifle) or a Weatherby Vanguard which I got in 257Weatherby. I have a number of Ruger tang safety rifles and some Rem rifles as well as others but the Tikka wins out for me.

                Not to much experience but have shot both remi 700 in 308. And a tikka. I'm pleasantly surprised with the tikka I stumbled upon. Ridiculously smooth and accurate. Also I did alot if savage research and would've bought one if I was paying cash instead of trade. Great value an good reviews.

                    Thanks guys for the info. and input. Look like I will be going with the Remington 700. Which one is my best choice of the rifle, the short one, the longer barrel one, or the tactical one. Is Retting in Culver City is my best shot to get the rifle.

                    Thanks

                      it really depends on what you want to use it for. 24" is the norm, 26" are on a few, and 20" in the tactical. Keep in mind that the Griswold Brothers in Ventura have STOCK 16" bbl on one of their rifles and it's pings 1000 yards all the time. You DO lose velocity downrange with shorter barrels, but 800 yards is really the practical range for .308 (even though it CAN go farther). I like 24" myself.
