    Family Handgun transfer

so I came across this a few weeks back, read it over and thought "cool"

Today though, I saw the link in another thread and reread it.

I again read the part that between 18-21 can legally own handguns, but I got to thinking,

    1. under 21 can't buy HG ammo in CA.... would you have to have your parents buy that for you too?

    2. what kind of hassles would be involved with that (LEOs unaware of this "loophole"...etc)

    3. are there restrictions to what a person between 18-21 person can do with his/her legally acquired HG? (assuming the actions would be legal for anyone over 21)

    4. would it be "bad" in the eyes of CA for a parent to buy a HG specifically to transfer it to their child who is between 18-21?

Sorry if this has been beaten to death already... I just find it interesting cause I might not want to wait 2.5 long years to own a hand gun

      1. From what I understand it is illegal to sell ammo to someone under 21 if they believe its for use in a handgun. Its should be fine if your parents buy the ammo for you. If you buy it saying it will be used in a rifle and then use it in a handgun I'm not sure if you would be breaking the law or not.

      2. I doubt you would be hassled just because you have a handgun and your not 21. You would need to fill out the form and send it to the DOJ so the gun would be registered in your name if they run it.

      3. Not that I am aware of. Some counties might not issue a CCW until you are 21.

      4. Nope. Its legal for your parents to buy you a gift. When I did it I called the DOJ to ask some questions and they were very helpful.

Get your HSC and you should be good to go.

Call the DOJ, that way there is no question in your mind.

No - just LOTS of questions and conflicting information.

All of the OP questions but ammo are 'no problem' answers. The ammo thing is a problem for retailers selling ammo - outside of .22, the common handgun calibers are sort of unusual for long guns, so indeed getting it through your parents would be the easiest.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

Uhhh... I wouldn't mess with it at all my friend. Just wait til 21 to get em a pistol. I had to wait til 21 to get my 1911, which I wanted SO bad at 17.

Why? I would give my responsible adult daughter a gun if she wanted one. I will buy her ammo too. If its not illegal, why should the OP wait until he's 21 just because you did?

indeed. Handguns are fun, and I would love to have one of my own. Since I can legally have one (from what I understand, with little hassle) before Im 21, I would love to have one.
