I was recently introduced by a friend as : "This is John. He's a gun nut!"
I replied that saying I was a "nut" implied a negative connotation. I mean, if I was really interested in baseball or football, I would be a "fan". If I was interested in remote controlled model planes, I would be a model plane "enthusiast", and generally would not have been refered to as a baseball / football / model plane "nut".
Us gun enthusiasts are so misunderstood.......

You injure your trigger finger while working on a gun project and have to laugh at the irony.
