"I suck at iron sights" support group

Yup. That's it. I suck at iron sights.

Took the .303 British Enfield and 91/30 Mosin at the range yesterday and after an hour of shooting high frustration, I finally hit a 2" group @ 50 yards.

I am secretly jealous of you guys who can consistently hit small groups with iron sights, especially when standing... and especially at 100+ yards.

This is not a thread for you guys/gals who are good with iron sights. This is for the iron sight challenged. Thank you.

    You are not alone...

I'll admit I suck at iron sight before Appleseed! Now, I suck slightly less...

I'd try iron sights on something that isn't a milsurp before you say you suck at iron sights. There's some factors there that are outside your control that could affect accuracy.

Get to an Appleseed! I used to suck at iron sights too. Now that I'm a Rifleman, if I can see it, I can hit it! I'm telling you, Appleseed is where it's at if you wanna shoot small groups with iron sights. 4" group, every time, standing at 100 yards

Don't try learning and honing your skills on iron sights while:

          1. Using ancient farm implements with questionable sights

          2. Standing

You need to go get a ruger 10/22 and go prone on some sandbags or something stable so you get your body movement out of it and learn how to get proper sight picture and sight alignment.

Only after you're proficient at this should you move up into other positions such as sitting, kneeling, and then finally standing.

walk before you can run and learn on a light, modern rifle.

I suck with iron sights... but it's because of my tired, middle-aged eyeballs. Proper vision correction takes care of that. If you can't focus clearly on the front sight, have a chat with your friendly neighborhood optometrist.
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

I thought I sucked with iron sights when I only had my mosin. Lucky to put 5 shots on a page at 100. Then I used a 10/22. Shot about a 5" group. Still thought I sucked, but a little better. That was bulk ammo. Then I shot an ar, and sandbagged at 100 I could shoot an inch if I REALLY tried. That's about where I'm at now. That was a 16", that now has a red dot. I'm currently building a 20" ar that's only going to be iron sights, I'm gonna train up with that.

Without having a good barrel, good sights, and good ammo, it is hard to measure real accuracy of a rifle. My match built M-1A will shoot 1 MOA group with match ammo, but it has a Krieger barrel, match sights and bedded in a McMillan stock. My standard M-1A cannot compete with it.

You also have to have good shooting skills, also.

also just remember : Mosins and Mausers, etc...

those rearsights, even when flat are good out to like 200yards, so you pretty much never have to adjust them

Are you a true rifleman or did you attend a class about shooting?
Don't mean to be derisive, just curious!

Ill add this, milsurps are a bad standard to judge your performance. Personally I can shoot just about anything I can see with an M16 (as much as I hate the damn things I did train on them for near a decade). When I go to shoot either my M48 Yugo Mauser or any of my Vintovka Mosina I do much, much worse. Groups are still acceptable, IE the target would be dead which is what matters, but they aren't very pretty.

CMMV - i had the same experience. A calgunner let me shoot their AR15 and it was like night and day between my 24/47 and the ar15. I felt like i was cheating on my old girl

                        LOL

Hey at least you had yours on right I have an AR I bought from someone with the buis on backwards and didn't realize it rofl. Wondering why I can't hit the target at 25 yards.

Something to keep in mind about an AR type weapon is the muzzle velocity. I don't know how similar .223 is to 5.56, but 5.56 is really fast. This means that is has a flatter trajectory, compared to .30 cal trajectory anyway. This also means that you don't have to be as precise with the range estimation. It seems natural to me that someone would feel that they are a better shot with a M16, for example, vs a M14.
