Any tips for a 1st time BLMer?

I feel like trying out shooting out in open land for a change as opposed to restricted & pricey firing ranges. Took me a while to figure out what "BLM" stood for haha but I did find their site so there's some info. there. Thought I read a longg while back about there being a map available for purchase here or through a local government's dept. about where it is legal to shoot? I can't remember. I know I should bring my own targets(I'm assuming personal steel targets would be okay??) and to pick up after myself to make it look as if I were never there. Is there any ettiquette/tips that you guys could pass down to me? If I see other people there, do I go out and find a different spot or would it be okay to shoot near them? Do I have to find something with a proper backstop, etc? Any help would be appreciated.

I hate it when I'm in the middle open country shooting and someone rolls right up to my rig and wants to set up. I usually tell them to find a different spot. (in a nice polite way of course)

Bring snacks and drinks and have fun!

Haha okay, I thought so I've never been out in the middle of no where and encountered someone else with a gun so kind of want to avoid that.

If the spot you are at is wide open, dont roll right up next to some guys and set up. stay a fair distance away from them.

If the spot is more canyon... filled?.... and it is fairly busy, *try* to find a more secluded spot, if you cant, ask someone "you mind if I set up next to you?"

I always bring a first aid kit w/ quick clot, H20, snacks, collapsible table, sometimes ez up canopy when it's hot.
When people drive by behind us, we usually cease fire, wave at them, then get on with our shooting.

You already said it, but it bears repeating. Clean up after yourself. Too many slobs ruin it for everyone else. Thanks, and have fun.

Its really easy; find a place that takes 2 days to get too by horse back ! No one but rattle snakes ever shows up!

East of Fallon, NV on Hwy 50 is more BLM land than not. Lots of BLM roads are marked with signs. You learn to recognize the standard BLM cattle guards after a while. Just drive down one of those dirt roads for half an hour in one of those wide NV valleys where you can see that there is no human habitation for a miles and miles. I've never seen anyone else at all, much less any other shooters.

                    Clean up your garbage.

Eat at the International Cafe in Austin. Sleep in Austin or Ely.

                    Good times.

I haven't been for quite a while, but yes, we always look for a place with a good backstop. Surprising how many people are out there on bikes and quads.

Based on your last post, I think I know where you are going. Watch out for guys on quads, you shouldnt have to much trouble about the back stop, but make sure to pick up all your trash. People pick up their brass, but not their shot shells or their targets, it looks like a garbage dump...

                        I'll see you out there.

Check the weather for wind. Windy days in the desert are miserable.

Bring a sturdy folding table, comes in handy. A shade cover is nice if you're going to be out for a while.

Bring printed document provided by CG on CA legal firearms, if it applies to you. When are planning to go anyways. We are headed out to a BLM near Reno on Friday. You are welcome to camp next to us and use our targets but don't shoot the target post.
