    Bumpfire question regarding wear.

I see all these cool videos on bumpfiring semi autos, looks like fun, but then something popped in my head regarding how converting a semi auto to full auto would result in a full auto whose bolt would probably fail after 100 rds or so.

So, my question to you guys is the following:

Are the semi auto bolts in both the ARs and AK47s not up to the job of continuous "bump fire"?

I've wondered the same thing about SKS's that get the stuck firing pin and go full auto. I imagine that it would do some damage fairly quickly.

You're not converting a firearm from SA to FA. You're not adding parts or filing down sears. Your SA rifle is still that before and after bump firing.

And no, the bolts are not up to prolonged bump firing.

Besides, bump firing reminds me of that stupid arsed "spray fired from the hip" term that some of the idiot antis like to use.

I'm no expert but, I've seen FA bolt groups for AR's for sale in many places.

http://www.cmmginc.com/ has them as an upgrade when you order an upper.

I always thought that for semi auto use, the thing would last forever.

Depends on the manufacturer, but for the most part the bolts are IDENTICAL between FA and SA guns. The only difference is that the companies who make FA guns MPI and proof test *EVERY* bolt.

Most, if not all, of the big-name budget gun manufacturers (DPMS, Stag, RRA, Bushmaster, etc) only do batch testing. Stag batch tests from much smaller batches than DPMS, for example, but they do not test EVERY bolt.

Companies with stronger reputations, even if they don't manufacture FA guns, test every single bolt and manufacture their bolts to the same specifications as the FA ones.

So for example, if you buy a semi-auto LMT rifle, its bolt is absolutely identical in every way to a FA bolt, and the upper might even include a FA carrier as well. FA and SA carriers from companies like this are identical in every mechanical aspect, but are just cut slightly differently.

So yes. The bolts are definitely up to prolonged bump firing. Depending on the manufacturer.

There is no difference between a FA bolt and a SA bolt. In fact, there's no such thing as a FA or SA bolt when it comes to the AR15/M16 platform. All bolts are identical.

There is a small difference in the carriers, but materially and mechanically, from a reputable manufacturer, they can be considered identical. The only difference is that the SA carrier will not allow for FA fire in a FA lower.
