    I just wanted some ammo.

So I'm going out to the range this weekend and I went through my cabinet and almost gasped D: I was "terribly" low on ammunition. So I jumped in my vehicle and drove on down to the nearest ammunition supply store.

I walked in and said,"I need some 12 guage, and some 30-06."

The lady behind the counter says,"Alright what kind?"

I blinked and glanced behind the counter and almost went pale, there were so many boxes and different types. I knew they existed by I never really paid much attention to how abundant the options are.

I am no way advocating making only one type per caliber, I'm just astonished.

She put like 5 different 12 gauge boxes on the counter and asked me what I would be shooting at.

I said defensive, and she recommended trap shot, and then I said,"Why not slugs?"

"Because if you miss that slug will go through walls after walls." She replied.

I know this, and Although I said "defensive" I meant to say "offensive tactical" however I felt saying offensive ammunition might make me look evil :|.

So then I said,"Well I only shoot at the range and I need a few more slugs so I'll just take a box of slugs."

So she put all the other boxes away and set the $6.00 box on the counter when I went,"I'll need 2 boxes of 30-06 as well" "What kind do you want?"

I about fainted again... but eventually I left the store with a few boxes, and this weekends range time will be fun
I got DOJ on speed dial XD... and it still didn't help

That's why I buy ammo online. 5,000 rounds at a time and there's hundreds of options and you don't have to worry about someone judging you.

OK newbie, you want 30-06 ball. (168-175 grain FMJ). For the shotgun get some no.8 target loads, Double AAs are nice.
The poor lady was just trying to help but it's hard to help if even you don't know what you want or need. "Defensive" ammo really isn't much help, with a 12 gauge at 10 feet it's all defensive.

      Thanx, Russ

Man, I do NOT want to go to the grocery store with you. You would just get jammed up with how many...........jams there are.

Of course, the story doesn't make any sense since you had bought ammo before.

In the hypothetical realm, it illustrates why no one should let "the nearest ammunition supply store" store his ammo. Buy it cheap, stack it deep.

          I don't know about you.. but for a defensive 12ga shotshell, I'll choose 00Buck or the WIN PDX1 (a 1 oz. slug followed by 3 00Buck pellets).

I wouldn't use trap or other birdshot for HD.

OP, if the boxes confuse you, just wait until if you ever get into reloading when you're choosing your powders, projectiles, grains, Ogive, casting moulds, cases, primers, FL dies, neck sizing dies, decappers, presses, tumblers, media, case lubes, case trimmers...etc just to name a few.

I have 4 different kings of slugs and 3 types of 00s.

If you really want offensive try these, I bet they will go through a lot of stuff. These is the ultimate SHTF ammo.

12ga and 30-06 are probably the top 2 as far as options and versatility haha

I have bought ammo before, and the thing is, the places I used to buy ammo from before only sold two types of 12 gauge, 00 buck and slug. So I only had the two options and it was easier to me to pick.

I hate picking Jam at the store, so many jam options, its almost as bad as cheese options.

How about next time I just walk in and say,"I am looking for 12 gauge ammo that I can use when a foreign army invades america and I need to defend our home-front in close quarter and urban settings, as well as using it to breech doors that I will need to forcefully enter when I am defending the home-front."

Perhaps then I will get a straight answer, or just a blank stare.

OK, first I don't use a shotgun for home defense, a pistol works much better and only takes one hand in a pinch. Yeah, 00 buck is a stout load but no fun to shoot, same for slugs. Inside the house at 15 to 20 feet, no. 8 shot will slow down just about anybody, you can follow that up with some 0000 buck if you want but at close range all the lead is going into one spot anyway.

Yeah....though, those who choose to use a shotgun for HD, just the sound of a pump action can be enough psyche to detour an intruder. There is no mistaking the sound when you rack a shotgun followed up by a "get the F outta my house or i'll shoot"

I dont want to cap anyone in self-defense if I dont have to.. BUT If the threat is real, I'm also sure as **** I dont want to slow down a criminal when my or my family's life is at stake...I want to STOP the threat right then and there. No second chances when your life is on the line.

I'm concerned about someone who wasn't aware of the differences between ammo choices, yet is looking for ammo for "offensive tactical" situations. Sounding a bit mall ninja
