Cany anyone ID this 1898 Krag Jorgensen (PICS!!!)

LOTS OF PICTURES AT BOTTOM OF PAGE

The rifle shown below is a Model 1898 Krag-Jorgensen Carbine. It was purchased by my uncle in 1960 in St. George Utah, intended to be used for deer hunting. I have been told the carbine is a vary rare variant of the full length infantry rifle?

Its chambered in .30-40 Government caliber. It has the "3 notch" rear sight leaf for running horses. I was given the rifle when I was 2 years on right before my uncle passed. The last time it was fired was approximately 1989, it does work well and its very accurate. It appears to have 4 groove (?!?) rifling and the bore is fairly shiny. As you can see the bluing is pretty and so is the wood.

The rifle is in GREAT shape overall! This is the Krag I kept talking about a few months back when y'all helped me thru my tough-time financially...

I was curious if any of you guys can tell me an approximate value on this war collectible. I am very interested in parting ways with the old girl as I am in need of some funds and I dont ever use the Krag...

So if you guys have any idea what it's worth, please let me know (send a PM PLEASE as I don't always see emails)

I'd be most interested in trading for a Kel-Tec SU16 or some interesting handgun like a Glock 19 or a Taurus PT-111 or something like that.... (Make me an offer I can't refuse, lol) Since its an 1898 there is NO FFL INTERVENTION NEEDED
CASH N CARRY HERE FOLKS!!! This rifle shoots a very effective .30 caliber bullet (first .30 adopted by the US .GOV and smokeless powder as well... this will still bag a deer w/no troubles!)

If you can help me figure this out, lemme know...I'd surely appreciate it!!!

    Jay S.

P.S. If this is in the wrong forum, mods feel free to move... Thank you!

            Edited to add:

I'd like to trade for a Kel-Tec SU16, .223 Caliber SAIGA-type AK (or a .223 SKS if you have such an almost mythical beast) or perhaps a Glock 9x19 pistol...

I'm also looking for a Keltec P-32 or P38T or even a P11 if there is any legal ones in-state....

Also on my wish list is a break-down pre-57 Model 97 shotty or a pre-57 Auto-5 or Remington Mod. 11 auto shotty... Maybe a shooter grade CMP Garand??

Id also consider just about anything thats unique...let me know. I have a thing for .32ACP pocket pistols and old japanese street bikes...

            THANKS

That Krag is pretty neat, although from what I know (and it isn't much) the stock is not original.

This one rifle is probably the single nicest firearm I have in terms of condition of the wood and the bluing, all the rest of the crap I have are basic shooters in mediocre cosmetic shaoe, Up until I posted today I was under the impression (gee thanks Uncle P) that it was some rare war piece.

I need money (who doesn't) so I was trying to figure out what this Krag is, and what it might be worth.

I prefer to get guns for guns when I get rid of one.

Lets say I have this Krag and someone really wants it and they have a Kel Tec and they trade me, I'd have an easier time of selling the Kel-Tec than the Krag to get some $$

I just found out today that this isn't a factory carbine. My whole life I was told by many family members that this gun was "rare" and "speacial" and that someday it would be worth a lot of money. Now Ive learned differently.

So, in an effort to get something out of it, I listed the weapons Id be interested in a trade for.

As for an "old japanese street bike" Im looking for one to use as cheaper transpo because my S10 doesn't get the greatest mileage and while Kristy is commuting to school each day, the ol' Duke (S10) is doing its best to haul my carcas around to job sites. Lately Ive been working where I Don't need tools, and they keep trying to force me to take a fellow co-worker to and from the job (for some meager gas money, like .17 cents a mile or some such BS) so I thought something like an early 80s street bike would be a cheap mode of transpo with insurance, gas and clutches/tires cheap and easy to deal with.

I just got new (to me..prolly 90% tread) 31-10.50x15" tires and suspension parts (ball joints, tie rod ends, bushings, etc...all economy grade but so what it works) so the truck is doing a little better in the mean time

Anyway I do need $$ and I know theres lots of people that collect old rifles on the net, so I thought it might be easier to trade the rifle for a modern firearm and then sell THAT since it would be easier to do so to accrue funds, as opposed to trying and selling it....

Ive been working on my shop area getting things re-arranged so I have more area to work so I can start doing things again like the Mag Locks and other neat toys. I dunno if Im gonna keep doing the magazines or not, but I believe RSSSLVR is still doing them? I could be wrong.

                  Take it easy everyone

Alot isn't a word and allot isn't the word you think it is.

I'd really like a Colt 1903 frame, bad finish okay!
I'm also looking for a good deal on a 1911 frame or two for budget/spare parts builds.

Nice rifle, but it's NOT AN ANTIQUE-they made 1898 krags up to 1910, as 1903 springfield production was slow to retool. Sorry to burst your bubble.

FWIW the rifle has been sporterized. It is a standard model 1898 rifle that has been shortened. Nice hunting gun I am sure.

Yep Im aware its sporterized (I know you sent this to the gent above)

But I was hoping it might still be worth a decent trade as its a beautiful rifle. The fit/finish is top notch as is the blueing (or whatever that finish is) The wood fits beautifully and it shoots very well.

The magazine cut off even works so you can single load from the ejection port, no problem...

Can you guys gimme a fair ball park area of its worth?? Being a pre-57 and not needing to go to an FFL makes it worth a little more in my book, just for convenience, but i could be wrong...

What do you think, maybe $350.00? Or is that CRAZY lol....

I had hoped to get an SU16 and some cash, but it dont look that way now.

                            Thank you guys!

350-375 seems like the ballpark, not needing an FFL transfer usually adds 35-50 worth of value to a gun.

you'rs is still a beautiful example so it should sell quick.

Sorry it didn't turn out to be as valuable as you'd hoped. (I've had that happen on a few things I've sold, its a disappointing feeling)
