    Recommend me a safe....

This safe will be used exclusively for pistols and needs to be pretty burly, as in 200+ pounds. Ideally it would be in the range of 32" tall and 28" wide. It must have a non-electronic dial (combination) type locking mechanism.

Any ideas where I should look?

You could give these guys a call, everything fits except the lock. Since they're the manufacturer, the could probably put in a mechanical lock.

Buy direct from the manufacturer. Thick steel, lifetime warranty, no gimmicks.

I was thinking of taking out pistols and other small items from the big beast safe, and having these guys make me a custom sized smaller one ... 7 gauge

Oh yeah, forgot to add that I'd like it to be under $500.

You need an old antique safe! My grandparents had one in their pantry and they kept documents and money in it. It was about waist high, and I swear the steel was 3 inches thick!

anything under $500 isn't going to give you much security and fire protection. Basically it's like a security blanket.

I have a visalia safe and would totally recommend them

That's a good idea. Sturdy might be able to make you something like a model 2419, only 1/2 the height. Give them a call Monday.

Since your not storing long guns then you only need a short safe. Less steel=less money. Under $500? Costco has a short Winchester fire lined safe for this budget but its smaller than you wanted. Hide it and bolt it down and you should be ok.
I have a Sturdy and like it a lot. If you bump up your budget some I'm sure they can come up with something for you. Dial locks are standard. 7ga is too. US made in fresno. Check out their site. Liberty is good as well but generally not as tough as a Sturdy IMO.
                    good luck.

Try these guys. Got my safe from them years ago and have been recommending them since. http://www.visaliasafes.com/
Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're still not out to get me!!!
