    Define Off-Roster Handgun?

    CalGunners,

Here's a noob question? What does it mean to have a off-roster hand gun?
What makes it to be off-roster? I know you can by them anymore but used ones right?

    Thanks!

Every model of every handgun sold in the state of california (with a few exceptions like to law enforcement) must be approved by the California DOJ (department of justice). This way the state can charge hundreds of dollars to the firearms manufacturer for each model, color, and size that they want to sell in california and make them submit (I think 3 but could be wrong) handguns to be submitted to the drop test to make it such a pain in the ***** to sell in california that no manufacturers want to deal with the hassle. Any handgun that has not gone through the process, or did but their DOJ blessing has expired, is "off roster" you can check here to see if a specific firearm is on the roster http://certguns.doj.ca.gov/

There is also a list of Olympic pistol exemptions. http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms/pdf/op.pdf

You can PPT (private party transaction) the off-roster pistols.

Additionally, if you can obtain the off-roster pistol using one of these:

        Law Enforcement Officer
Intrafamily interstate transfer (father or mother to son or daughter. brother to brother not allowed)
        Single shot exemption
        or inheritance
