Best way to zero a red dot ?

I have a bushnell trophy red dot. What would be the best was to zero it in? should I start at 25 yards or start at 50 yards? and if it constantly shoots high and to the right I move the sight down and to the left correct?

The very existence of flamethrowers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, "You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

Start at the closer range (a few shots) then move out to 50.
yes on the direction oposite of where you have the hole in paper till you get to the middle.

Use this Improved Battlesight Zero target.

What i do is shoot three shots and try to get the closest grouping i can from 25 yards. then adjust accordingly.

Thank you! that target should help a lot! Last time I shot my red dot trying to be accurate (the last time I actually used it I was just having fun with my rifle and wasnt caring about being accurate) I was low left then high right. Next time I go to the range I really want to zero it within 50 rounds.

Remember that if you've zeroed your iron sights at 100-200 yds (pretty much SOP), then due to parallax the red dot would be 2.5" or so high at 25-50 yds (assuming negligible bullet drop)...as demonstrated with the Aimpoint target.

The rifle classes I've taken have you zero the irons at 150 yds (.223/5.56) and optics at 50 yds using a similar strategy, the actual POI difference at 25 yds is essentially trivial for CQB purposes. Not a problem when plinking but the parallax error from zeroing both at the same POI at 25-50 yds becomes a huge problem at 100 yds and beyond.

If your iron sights are zeroed, mount your red dot and move the dot down to the top of the front iron sight while centered in the rear iron.

I do it the same way I do a scope. At 25 yards I center the red dot on the bulls eye. One shot, and then reset the red dot on the bullsey and move the windage and elevation to place the dot on the POI. Move to 50 and do the same out to 100.

This. It will bring you VERY close, then you can fold down/ignore your irons and ensure that the red dot shoots to the same point as the irons.
