      Ultra-minimal that will cover most needs - .22lr rifle, concealable handgun in 9mm or .357 mag, light to mid-power carbine in .357 mag, 30-30, .223 or 7.62 x 39.

      Minimal that should cover all your needs - 22lr rifle; concealable handgun 9mm or .357 mag; full-size handgun in same caliber as your concealable; light to mid-power carbine in .357 mag, 30-30, .223, or 7.62 x 39; scoped high-power rifle in .308, 30-06, etc.

        .22 Rifle
        .223 Carbine
        .308 Rifle/scope
        12ga Shotgun

        9mm Pistol
        10mm Pistol
        357Mag Revolver

        This is what I would consider being the minimum, but... You could also add a higher end air gun, which is great for a lot of smaller hunting options, isn't loud, and ammo is easy to keep.

          Pistol = Semi 9mm, Beretta or Glock
          Rifle = Semi 5.56, AR, Mini-14
          Shotgun = Pump 12ga, Mossberg, Remington
          Extras = 22lr conversion for AR

          I have much more then this but I'll never dip below this list.

          Pistol = (2) Beretta 9mm
          Rifle = (1) A4gery, (1) 10/22
          Shotgun = (1) Mossberg 500

          I'd like to add an M4gery when the money presents itself. It's a lot to carry but not any less then what I've carried in the sand box. I'd carry a Beretta pistol on my side, the A4 up front & the 500 on my back. Who ever is with me can also carry a Beretta on their side, the M4 up front & the 10/22 on their back.

            Before the boating accident, I had 9mm and .45 semiautos, a .38 revolver, bolt and semi .22 rifles, pump and single shot 12 gauge shotguns, bolt and lever hunting rifles, and an AR pattern rifle.

            It is quite terrible when the James River runs over the banks.
            Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

                This ^^^

                IMO This should be a start to everyone's collection. You start with a .22 rifle, add a 12 gauge pump when you can, after that either the .357 revolver or the 30-30 lever action rifle. But IMO these are the basics and should be covered before embarking on black rifles or semi auto pistols. JMO, one that I'm sure is not shared by all.

                  The problem with a 30-30 over a .223 is ammo availability. If you're going to go with a minimalist collection then you should consider this collection to me a minimalist survival collection, and with taking that into account ammo should come into the picture. 30-30 lever action is great, it was my first real rifle other than a .22, but I wouldn't want it over a EBR if I was trying to survive.

                    My minimalist approach is usually as follows:

                    • -an N-frame .357 Magnum 27-2 (direct descendant of the original)
                      • -in at least three barrel lengths (3.5", 5", and 6")
                      • -in both finishes (nickel and blue)
                      • -whoops, better throw in the 4" Nickel I found
                      • -and the 5" 27-2 with presentation case
                      • -and the 6" 27-3 that I can't seem to let go of

                    • Of course, then you need to start collecting 19's and 66's, since they were developed to be easier to carry
                      • 2.5" 19
                      • 4" stainless 66 is a classic
                      • 6" 19 in blue
                      • ooooooohhhhh have to have that 3" 66 that popped up....

                    • And then everybody should have an L-frame 586, since it was the compromise between the K and N frames (and conveniently fit Colt Python holsters, ahem)
                      • why not add a 581 fixed-sight variant?

                    ...and that's just .357's. In three frames. Of one manufacturer.

                      No mention of survival in the OP, as I read it I was thinking of a basic collection a shooter should have. It's JMO, but I wouldn't short change the effectiveness of the 30-30. Survival means more than gun battle, and a 30-30 is a fantastic all around weapon for either hunting or self defense. The 30-30 is a larger round with higher velocity and delivers more energy on impact. Part of survival is food, and if I'm going to have to take game in the field I'd much rather do it with a 30-30. I do think that a fellow could do a lot worse than having one when the SHTF. Ammo is available now, stock up.

                        ^Thats a good point. If were talking about the gun(s) we'd actually take with us if we needed to leave and head for the hills or local FEMA center, there's a lot of versatility in a lever-action 30-30. Compact, light, slim profile, capable of rapid fire, good power, and no magazines to lose.

                          i dont know about the minimalist part because i buy every firearm i can, iam addicted. but if i was thinking minimalist they would be in calibers the military or police have as in 5.56, 7.62, 300wm, 9mm, 40 s&w. not .270, 7mm, 30-30 or 6.5 or calibers that are not easy to come by if the SHTF.

                                I actually think people who are constantly focused on "common calibers" are being misguided.

                                I think there's a lot of merit to having firearms in all kinds of different calibers.

                                If everyone has guns in common calibers, what ammo is going to be the first to dry up?

                                After everyone has raided the local walmart and there's nothing but .410, .45LC, and .35 Remington left, I'll be set
