    First trip to the range.

My wife a I are planning our first trip to the Range with our handguns and a .22 rifle. What would be the best way to transport the firearms to the range? We have a range bag that fits both hand guns and has a locking zipper. It also has a separate compartment that hold six mags. Would it be legal to transport the loaded mags in the same bag, but a different compartment as the locked and unloaded handguns? Also does the rifle have to be in a locked case or is a cable lock through the action acceptable? We are really looking forward to our first shooting experience together. Thanks.

The magazines can be in the same locked compartement as the pistol, or a different unlocked one, doesn't matter. You could also leave the pistol in an unlocked compartment of your bag, and put the bag in the trunk of your car.

You don't have to do anything special with the rifle, as long as it's not loaded. You can throw that in the back seat, or even drive around with it on the dashboard if you want.

      Have fun.

It would be advisable to NOT transport any firearms outside of the trunk. If you happened to get stopped by a police officer and they see the gun, they will draw their firearm on you. Transporting all firearms in a locked container (not just a cable lock) prevents any issues from arising. Also transport ammo separately from the locked containers (inside the vehicle is fine).

AMMO AND GUN can be in the same locked container, or lose in the trunk. Your trunk is considered a locked container. I usually just throw all my guns and bullets in the trunk and head off. No case no containers as the trunk is considered one. Long arms do not require a locked container so a back seat is fine. You'll be fine, just don't swings the guns arround while your transporting them.

This is correct with the exception of you having a "passage way" from your car to the trunk that is not locked. You also MUST have a long gun in a locked container if you are traveling through a Gun Free School Zone.

The whole ammo outside the container used to be law and some LEOs may not be up to speed on that. However it is legal to have gun and ammo together in a locked container(however not a loaded gun!!!). I think campaly is just subscribing to the better safe than sorry school of thought. I for one find it easiest to just grab everything I need and put it in my trunk. That way no possible issues or misunderstandings can occur from someone seeing a gun and I dont have to bother with all the cable locks and such. However as with all things ymmv.

So, before I head to work my wife asks when we can go shooting again. Looks like i am going to have to learn to reload!

For a first post, that has so much FUD in it, it has an Elmer accent.
You have a lot of learning to do here that will stop you from trying to freak out a new shooter for no good legal/reason.
