My step dad used to be a mechanic for the city of San Jose; long retired but he had a collection of.. well I called them gun bones.
SJPD would bring down a bunch of guns that they would clear out of the evidence locker every year or so and watch as the mechanics in the garage put a torch to the chambers and frames. I have pretty nice S&W Model 10 in nickel that has the grip frame torched off at the butt and the forcing cone area, through the frame, torched open.

Pretty sad actually but that's what they used to do. Now I believe that San Jose PD takes them down to San Jose Forge and Foundry and dumps them in the fire whole.

Something I could never do. The persons responsible for such polcies will one day be regarded as degenerates (what they are). If you need someone to hold you while you cry, my rates are quite reasonable

Actually IT IS a 187 gun...lol... or it was a 187 gun. I work for an Inland Empire PD. I tried to have the department create a "most valuable crime weapons" sort of trophy case but they did not like the idea since it is not of educational benefit for the officers. They instead have a viewing case full of saturday night special type weapons ie: lorcin, davis, raven and an a few homemade types.

Sad day. There were only 580 of this grade of shotgun ever made.

wonder why the police couldn't just sell it at a police auction or somethin. Even if they got just 10% of the value, that's still a nice chunk of change for the department budget...

I was told that it is too much of a liability. What department wants to be in the headlines about firearms sold or auctioned off that actually get used in other crimes? The 10% made from an auction wouldn't cover any lawsuits or negative publicity. Plus, this collector shotgun was already used in a homicide.
