Apple/eyesight conundrum

I'm hoping to go to a Project Appleseed training weekend soon. Most likely I'll be shooting my old 10/22.

Something else "old" that I'll be shooting with are my less than perfect eyes. For the past few years I've needed reading glasses (1.75x) for close up vision for anything nearer than 2 - 3 feet. Clearly to see the 10/22 front sight clearly I'll need the glasses, but of course when I wear them anything beyond 8 or so feet is a blur.

Right now the 10/22 has the original sights, and I'm going to replace them, but the question is "replace 'em with what?" I'd really like to wear the Rifleman patch after qualifying with iron sights, most likely Tech Sights, but I think if I go that route I'll wear down the Ruger, and the instructors.

For my situation what would be the best sight to go with, red dot or glass?

Also, since the Ruger will also serve as zombie slayer I'd like the solution to be sturdy and reliable, the Tech Sights would meet those requirements, but I'd probably need to throw the 10/22 at the zombies to hit 'em.

What's a good $100-ish solution?

Try the Tech Sights first, before the Appleseed. Used the smallest post-its you can find and see how well you do with that. Little post-its are cheap and come in nice bright, easy to see colors. Works for me.

Try a cheap 2x red dot scope. Or a Wallyworld 3x on your 10/22.

If you need glasses to make out the front post on the rifle, then I'd suggest you just bite the bullet and go with optics. There will be more than enough things for you to learn at Appleseed without the added distraction and frustration of not being able to see anything.

Scopes are not cheating, and they are not magic. Getting a Rifleman score will still take a lot of work. And you can always go back to irons after making the score, and after narrowing down the list of things to work on.

So... red-dot vs. scope. Both can work. Your budget, however, biases my opinion towards a scope. I personally don't know a $100 red-dot that I'd be happy with. Seen plenty of the cheap ones at Appleseed, but I have yet to see one that holds its zero. I run a HoloSight on my AR-15; those, EOTechs, Aimpoints, etc. all perform very well but they cost a lot of money.

$100 will, however, get you a decent low-power scope. I personally like the Weaver 4x scopes but there are many options -- Simmons, Bushnell, several others. You'll be able to find a nice .22 low-power scope and rings within budget. That's what I'd do in your place.

When my eyes first went bad I put colored fiber optics on my 10/22. You don't need your glasses to see them, they are bright and "pop" at you. If you want to stay with iron sights.
