DMV Extends Temporary Licenses To 90 Days

For those approaching your renewal date, might consider applying real early, especially since this can affect your firearm purchases.

Sacramento – Effective Monday, Feb. 28, Californians will be able to obtain a 90-day temporary extension on their driver license when submitting a renewal request by Internet, mail or in person, the California Department of Motor Vehicles announced today. The temporary paper licenses were previously valid for 60 days and originally only issued in DMV field offices. This effort is being implemented to better serve DMV customers.

"The DMV is aware of the inconveniences that California drivers are experiencing while they wait for their new licenses," said DMV Director George Valverde. "By extending the life of the temporary licenses, we hope to lessen any negative impact so that Californians can continue their daily lives without interruption."

Unfortunately, this simply means one can expect to have their firearm purchase delayed for a longer period of time. The DMV simply acknowledges their new system sucks and takes longer to process...so while you can drive longer on the interim permit, there is no other benefit.

How is it that in other states you can get a license printed WHILE YOU WAIT and in this state you must wait for 3 months?

I turned in my renewal via the web when I got the paperwork in the mail back in December, still haven't seen anything. Need to to go in next week and get a temporary argh

On a similar note, my car registration came about a month late. Usually I do it online but I lost my PIN code so I had to mail it in. On the day it was to expire I called and they said they had just barely received it! (I mailed it about 6 weeks before).

I applied early, and in person ... they gave me a paper extension things AND they put a hole in my full license, to invalidate it. So applying early may not be the thing to do.

You don't even need the pin code. License plate number and last 5 digits of the V.I.N.

I just renewed today without it.

I'm not advocating providing false information to a state agency...but someone told me if I were to apply early for my new license NOT to bring my current one and tell them I lost it when applying for the renewal.

mine expires on the 4th, i sent in my paper work about 2 months ago and still nothing, so it looks like i need to get a temp, when mine expires and i want to purchase a gun i may seriously think about jumping in on the sueing band wagon for 2a violation.

Got my new license last week, a month after I renewed it in person at the local DMV. I'd like to think it's because I'm special (and because the two DMV clerks were really nice and pleasant to talk to and so fast tracked my renewal ).

Not at all pleased though to see my birth date listed three times on the new DL. Still I admit being able to feel the raised type of two of the dates is kinda neat.

The DMV near me has a sign posted (no joke) which states -"any threats or violence against California state employees will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law".

The DMV must be an awful place to work. Whenever I go there, I get nothing but poor attitude.
