Lefty, really enjoy my 4506 that I got used for $400, but thats a 45, though soft shooting. I learned to actuate the slide lock with my index finger, and enjoyed the ambi decocker
FNP is next on my list of pistols to buy, totally ambi by the looks of it.
My xd has great ergonomics, great reliability, though I have seen people with issues with the guide rod and the slide lock, though I think that was a case of not adequately cleaning the pistol, but still far fewer malfunctions than I saw with glocks in the same time period (2000 - 3000 rounds in 5 months with a large group). The XD you may find used, and some mags stick a little, but it is adequately ambi, and with night sites, an all around great gun.
funny about that 1911 brass story. I think I may have a weak ejector spring on my 4506, it loves to eject brass right at my face, usually hitting the brim of my cap, and often going in my shirt.
My 1911 commander has an ambi safety, and again I can actuate the slide lock with my index finger. So the moral may be that safeties, de-cockers and mag releases need to be ambi, but that's all you need to be ambidextrous on the pistol, everything else (the slide lock and attachments) come to technique
