I would say that would fetch $400 in the market place easy.

i would say, a little higher, not sure, but go to a reputable dealer.
what kind of scope is that?
the jeweling on the bolt is nice.
i'd give you $401, right now.
That may be a CG first!

I'd say less personally. It has the military barrel, poor stock work, a cheap scope, and the jeweling looks crooked in the photos. Also what kind of trigger does it have, and where was it made? Any other work done to its internals or just bent bolt handle and a reblue? 8mm Mauser is a decent round. Easily enough for deer but not something every gun store will have on their shelf. The bolt face works with the 30-06, 308, etc. family though so it's a fairly easy rebarrel.

Most Mauser actions are fine, but some (Turkish in particular have a poor reputation) are crap. The steel used in them was to soft and the action will stretch and deform over time. If it was a rebarrel and you thought you would only shoot it once or twice a year to hunt with its no big deal. But if its the original it could be shot out to the point where it could have headspace problems. Also German actions are suspect as well depending on when they were made. A prewar rifle will likely be very well made though the barrel may be shot out. And a mid-war rifle may well have been made by slave labor and look like it was finished by a drunken beaver.
There is also some variation in action lengths, and ring diameters but that looks like a large ring long action (standard K98 or at least German pattern). Best advice I can give you is find out as much detail about it as possible and then start researching. That rifle is not one I would rush into unless it was crazy cheap.
I've built a couple rifles on Mauser actions and while they make great solid rifles they don't have much intrinsic value aside from a few cases or very well built custom rifles.

Yes some bolt wobble is normal in a 98 action as the bolt is drawn to the rear.

Isn't this the type of rifle Lee Harvey Oswald used? I'm pretty sure it is.

Oswald used a Carcano. And I can about guarantee that rifle would not sell anywhere near $400.

My grandfather brought back a couple mausers that he or my dad had sporterized. 8mm is a good cartridge.
