That is definitely unusual. I have not always gotton a copy of the dros (though I could always request a copy however) but I at least got a receipt of payment. Some gun stores will automatically give you a copy of the DROS, some may not. I don't think there is any foul play going on but at a minimum a reciept. When you do your paperwork to register your handgun, the dealer will complete the DROS and form 4473.

All good. I went back to the shop this morning and they gave me a receipt and copy of the DROS with no hassles. The salesguy mentioned the DROS is given "on request" as he was printing it up.
Not giving the shop name because they're good people, easy to deal with, and I take partial responsibility for not pressing the issue the first night I was there. Don't want to give them a bad name they don't deserve.Comment

Always ask for a receipt, and a copy of your DROS paperwork.Comment

Good you got it resolved; but in the first place, cash for anything and you would were fine with no receipt just after the transaction?
If I buy a sack of moldy potatoes and pay cash... I ask for a receipt.
When it comes to guns, cash or otherwise, I always get a receipt AND copy of the DROS without fail.
I HAVE had a couple of transactions over the years where having a copy of the DROS was useful - one due to a dealer imploding in bankruptcy and in a paperwork mess, another where a dealer could not find my paperwork (but at least had the gun in the back with my name on it).

Lesson learned, trust me.
Thanks. If it had gone down differently, I would have.

Something is wrong, go back and ask for a receipt, should have a p/u date & serial number of the firearm.I "bought" my first handgun the other night at a local shop: gave them a bunch of cash, filled out DROS paperwork, showed my CDL, etc. At the end of it all my gun disappeared into the back with "You can pick it up in 10 days at X time." And that was it. No receipt, no copy of the paperwork, no claim ticket, nothing. I walked out with nothing.
It felt really wrong handing over a big stack of cash and walking out completely empty-handed, without even a receipt. The salesman said not to worry about it, "The gun's DROS'ed to you," but still...
Was that weird, wrong, etc, or is that just how it's done?sigpic

I've always got a copy of the DROS, or some sort of receipt for pickup, even for a PPT. I won't bother with a receipt at a coffee shop, but for something that costs a heck of a lot more than a couple bucks, of course I'd want some sort of paperwork proving it's actually mine after I paid them.
It's good that you got it later, but maybe this shop should adjust their policy about that, because it could cause confusion.Comment
