    Eye Dominance

I just found out that I am cross eye dominant.
I am at a bit of a loss, I been shooting on and off with the "wrong eye" for 20 years...
Now with pistol, its not a big deal, I can just hold the gun under my dominant eye, but with rifle, there's no way I can get my head over the stock to use my left eye.
I really dont want to switch to left hand shooting and I also dont want to shoot pistol with one eye and rifle with another.

I suppose after all this time, it really dosent matter anymore, and changing will probably just screw me up even more. I wonder if you use your weak eye enough, would it compensate, like blind people with good hearing?

I am not a great marksman, but I have always had a natural abilty to hit what I aim at (or close anyway).

I dont even want to try shooting left handed, but I think I will try using my left domanint eye to shoot pistol. But then I am back to switching eyes when I shoot.

Is anyone else cross dominant? Apperantly it only affects, or afflicts, 10% of shooters.

Don't people put tape over their dominant eye when that's the case?

When I was younger I was great with a shotgun. Now I cannot hit a barn from inside. My eye dom changed. I just shoot rifles and pistols with my left eye closed. It may not be the best/correct way but my targets and game have never been able to tell me different. It works. I could never learn to shoot left handed so this works fine. I shoot very well.

I intentionally shoot with the wrong eye because it is easier to keep shooting on my strong side. I seem to do fine.

I keep telling myself that I will learn how to shoot right handed some day though.

I am left eye dom. and shoot with my left eye when shooting handguns.
However, I shoot with my right eye when shooting rifles.

                Seems to work.

Cross dominant here. I shoot handguns with the dominant eye, rifles on my strong side and squint the dominant eye, and shotguns of course with both eyes open. I have read many times how one should learn to shoot other-handed, on the dominant eye side. But have never heard a first hand account of that.

And I think Hickok45 is cross dominant, and it doesn't seem to hinder him.

What if you don't have a dominant eye?

Hard but Long term solution: train your non-dominant eye to be your dominant eye.

Normal solution: put tape over your dominant eye

I'm the same way, almost every time I blink, my dominance changes. That would due to 3 eye surgeries as a child to fix a muscle imbalance. So, I just close one eye when I am shooting.

I cross over when shooting weak handed pistol, but I shoot weak side and strong side rifle equally and while it doesn't feel as comfortable weak side, I shoot just as accurately either way. the real key is to practice and to keep both eyes open. you can switch sides if you want and am willing to put forth the effort, it only took me about one trip to the range to get it figured out.

Me. Right handed, left eye dominant. Often, I have to briefly squint my left eye to make my right eye take over. I always have to make a concious effort to make my right eye take control. I shoot with both eyes open, but it is difficult and tiresome, especially considering my right eye is weaker than my left. Astigmatism on right side does not help me.

                              I am cross dominate.

I shoot with my left eye, right hand, both eyes open for handguns.

I shoot with my right eye, right hand, both eyes open for rifles.

I found that for the rifle, when I blink my left eye when I can't focus, it'll help me settle down with my right eye. I just blink as many times as necessary (usually 1-2) to be able to focus with right while both eyes are open. It could be that my left is not that much more dominant than my right, but it works for me. With scopes, I never have to blink and just focusing on looking through the lens and it seems to help already.
