FMJ rifle ammo permitted at ranges?

I am getting ready to move to the Bay Area, and I have several hundred rounds of .308 FMJ ammo. Very few jranges where I am not permit it, so I use it at a friends ranch.

Are there rifle ranges in the Bay Area or further south that permit FMJ rifle ammo? Or is it even a problem in CA?

I think all outdoor ranges allow FMJs. I shot at Los Altos, Chabot, Coyote point, Livermore, Manteca and Sacramento and they all allow FMJ none metallic projectiles..

Are you confusing "FMJ" with ammo that contains steel? Some bullets have steel in the jacket or in the core, which can be a fire hazard. That's why most ranges in SoCal don't let you use ammo that attracts a magnet. None of the Bay Area ranges I know of check your ammo or require it be non-ferromagnetic.

They don't allow any full metal jacket rounds at the outdoor San Leandro rifle range. Only HP or SP. Yes they will inspect your ammo when you sign in.

That's strange. Ranges that don't allow FMJ....

Most don't have a problem with it....

Is the concern with FMJ increased chance of ricochet? This is the first I have heard of an outdoor range banning anything other than magnetic ammo

you will have a higher chance of ricochet from a hollow point them an full metal jacket. Most indoor ranges don't allow hollow point for that reason. FMJ's are the most common rounds allowed in shooting ranges, so that's kind of wierd they wouldn't allow it. Steel core and thungstun core are not allowed due to it's penetration(amor piercing) and if those bullets don't penetrate you bet you @$$ there going to ricochet.

Usually the FMJ will deform and won't ricochet at all. Maybe the pieces of the jacket might fly a couple feet but..... Try calling the range and have them give you a reason why the round is not allowed. But you shouldn't have a problem with shooting FMJ's here, or where your going.

I do know for a fact that Livermore frowns on magnet atracting bullets. I was busted there a couple of years ago by the "magnet patrol"....
