Could the build-up of metal shavings from natural wear and tear be a problem?

If you mean from the wear between the gun and magnet, i have wrapped the magnet with electrical tape, so there won't be any direct metal on metal contact.

If you mean from the gun itself from shooting, I clean my gun throughly after every use seeing as it is HD, so I don't think it will be an issue either.

De-Magnetizing is simple... just drop it on the floor and the electrons will re-align themselves. Mechanics trick, wrap a wire around a screwdriver handle and touch the wire ends to the car battery to magnetize the screwdriver. Drop it on the concrete floor to remove the magnetization. I would guess that just the cycling of the slide will do the same thing.

I remember this from Physics class from a long time ago now that you mention it.. Yes, I imagine cycling the slide will do the trick.

Yeah, that would not work for me. Behind the headboard you say? My bed is where the magic happens.

Seriously though, good idea. Good job OP.

I've seen a variation on this before, done with a magnetic strip and some screws to hold a gun next to a door frame or something. I'll see if I can find it. brb.

                ETA:
Here's an expensive ready made one.

                And here's one DIY style.

I thought about making one for my desk, to go underneath it. Hmm, I've got a hard drive laying around maybe I'll tinker a little.

Why not on a night stand where it's immediately available to you? Unless you have kids in the house, I imagine hiding it behind the headboard would be really hard to get to if somebody burst through your door and you were still dazed and shocked at 4AM.

I don't have kids, but I have dogs. They won't be able to get behind the bed.

Okay, so I shamlesly copied your idea

I got the same magnet, and its almost to stong, 95 pounds supposedly...
The contour of the slide on this old CZ makes it tilt just a bit so the grips sticks out at the perfect angle. The only thing I noticed was you have the barrel of your glock pointing down. I tried that and it was to awkward, so I flipped it around.

The only problem, is if you walk into the bathroom and look back you can see a bit of the grip sticking out, but whatever, you cant see it straight on and its only out when I am home.

I can reach right back and get a good grip on it, "draw" it and sight in in about 2 seconds...

and yes my apartment is so friggin small that I am standing in the bathroom door in the second pic. Thats the price you pay to live on the beach...

ha ha, and yes I had to move the bed out away from the wall so I wouldnt smash the gun into the wall if the bed where to.. um.. start rocking back and forth...

Nicely done. Any reason why you had it pointed up?
