    Gilbert is a naughty boy!

The seller of this boat says he wants to trade assault rifles and handguns for his boat, but isn't too bothered if they are registered or not. Does this sound like someone you would want to buy a boat from?

I dont think he understands what he is writing. When he says "registered" he means something else.... maybe....?

    Thats my guess.

Either that or ATF/DOJ spy/plant/troll etc...

Should I call him up and say, "oh yeah I gotta a ****ton of unregistered rifles, the whole deal... How bout some NFA stuff?"*

(I dont have a ****ton of unregistered rifles)

As long as he is willing to do legal tranfer on the firearms than it would be ok, but if he is asking for an under the table deal I would stay away. First Question I would ask is if he would be willing to Dros all of the firearms.

Maybe what he means to say are the C&R ones that don't have to go through dros. Lets give him the benefit of the doubt.

Sure, but I bet you didn't DROS any assault rifles in CA last week.

Unless the seller had been hiding under a rock, or in Pelican Bay for the past 11 years, he would have known there was an assault weapon ban in CA. If the seller had incorrectly used the term "assault rifle" to mean any legally-configured AK or AR pattern rifle and was aware that fixed mag and featureless versions of those rifles were available to legally purchase, you would have thought it he would have known it was unwise to use the term "assault rifle" in any public ad.

Add to that, he states he is OK whether any firearm is registered or not, sounds suspiciously like Gilbert may, or may not, be a little too relaxed about private-party transfer process. Read it how you will. The guy could be fishing for illegal transfers / firearms, or he could just be completely ignorant of gun laws, of which either could get him into hot water. If he was looking to trade CA-legal firearms through PPT, then he has worded his ad very poorly.

Or he could be calling an AR-style rifle an "assault weapon", much like many people call magazines "clips". Maybe he just isn't using the correct words, which doesn't make him a criminal. Ever heard of innocent until proven guilty?

Nope. None of what I bought since the first of the year has been registered. All of them were bought legally.

I never claimed the guy was a criminal. Shady, perhaps. Naive about gun laws, maybe. If you read my last post, it should clarify everything for you.

Nah, I actually agree with you, just being argumentative. Your first post had a pretty accusatory feeling to it but I know what you mean. It seems kinda suspect, but not someone I would immediately write off as a criminal. I'd be all for buying the boat from him if I wanted a boat and he was willing to do transfers on the trades. Once they're at the ffl and out of my hands, its none of my business what he does.

I'm assuming that "C&R" is curios and relics? Didn't California change that to having to be manufactured before 1900?

No, California did not change that. C&R long guns that are at least 50 years old can be transfered between two California residents without having to do a PPT at a California dealer.
