    Cleaning blue guns

I have a couple blue guns that I picked up (Model 29's) and was curious on what chemicals NOT TO USE that I may be using on my stainless guns.

I know I cant use the Metal Magic Gun Cloth that I use for the cylinder burns but what can I use?

Thanks for the help and information.

Nothing with acids, acids remove bluing very quickly, in fact, if you ever need to remove bluing from a gun, don't bother buying bluing remover, just get some liquid toilet bowl cleaner, works wonders.

Don't use any lead-away cloths, they will wipe away the blueing on contact. Also, not that you would try and clean your gun with these, but Coke/Cola and blood will also eat away the blue within 1/4 second of contact.

I use FP-10 (Breakfree CLP is similar) and it is the only thing I ever use on my blue guns. I use it to clean and wipe down after handling (as fingerprints can also cause super-fast rusting in humid conditions.)

Yeah, good call, CLP works good for cleaning. Though if a gun is really dirty, I'll hose it with some Simple Green and rinse it off with some water. Then dry it with an air compressor. After it's dry I make sure it gets a thin coat of oil over all surfaces to prevent rust. And remember, CLP displaces water, so it isn't super critical to make sure the gun is bone dry before oiling. In fact when I'm bluing guns I don't even bother to dry them off after the rinsing process, just go straight to a very liberal coat of oil.

Denatured alcohol seems to do a nice job.
