    Tommy Gun

    Hello everyone,

I have read many informative posts regarding the Tommy Gun, but I did not find anything relating the following scenario. Is the Tommy Gun legal to import from another state if it does not have any vertical grips , no bullet button and a 10 round detachable magazine? What about within California? Is there any special paperwork involved, does it need to be certified? I followed the flow chart by Calguns and my conclusion is it is legal, but I could be wrong.

    Thanks

    John

I just purchased this Thompson "Tommy gun" in December.
This model is the California compliant version with the "bullett button"
magazine release to it. They just became California compliant a few months ago.
But as far as i know, you are not able to import them into California if they are not the California legal models without the compliant magazine release, and 10 round magazine, and 10 round stick magazine.

      That's not true.

If you take a standard tommy gun and remove the pistol grip, it's CA legal. Period. You can even use high-cap mags in them if you lawfully owned any. No bullet button needed.

It doesn't have to be the exact "CA-Legal" model to be legal. It just has to be compliant with the law.

        Makes sense

        bdsmchs ,

I think you are right! Thanks for the input. That flow chart is dead on. Now trying to find an FFL to transfer one, that is another matter.

Last I heard they can be imported with certain modifications. I own a registered preban one but it is too much of a hassle to take it out because people are always questioning it and DOJ does not give out anything that I know of that you can just flash at people and tell them to go away. Legally I am allowed to have my forward grip on mine and the gun in it's original configuration but try telling all the know it all's on the gun range.

Just request a confirmation copy of your registration from the DOJ. They will send it to you. Now you have a letter you can flash people if you really want.

Thanks BDSMCHS: I sent for an update on what they had on account for me a month ago and all of the weapons were listed so I guess that roster would be good enough. I had a jerk at DOJ tell me years ago that if some cop had a problem he could just have DOJ look it up. Of course that would not stop the cop from taking it until "it was cleared up". The DOJ analyst could not respond to that issue but he would have somone get back to me and they never did. So I just left them in the safe for the last ten years.
