New 01 FFL

Not sure if this is the right forum, so if it isn't, please direct it to the correct place.

I have a commercial building with a little 10'x10' room. I have two options, either set up as an FFL myself (work liability prohibitive), or rent it out to someone who has or wants to be an FFL.
SO:
I am interested in either finding an existing FFL or someone who would like to become an FFL in the Turlock/MOdesto area for FFL transfers. Its not much, but for $200 a month rent its all yours. The hook is they must be willing to do OLL transfers.

Does anyone know what liabilities I run into renting the building to an FFL. How hard is it to get an 01 FFL?

Any information anyone could give me about the 01FFL process would be greatly appriciated.

Just do a search for starting FFL or some other type and you can see what the steps are to getting an FFL. It isn't that hard, but I will be honest, I don't think you want to just do transfers. It takes up way too much time for too little money. A 10x10 space is hardly enough for any kind of operation that is going to want to get bigger either.

Get the FFL yourself if you just want cheap guns and to skip the waiting period, but just be aware if you start getting customers, they will slowly start taking up all of your time, especially if you give good service at cheap prices.

I figure there ain't a lot of money in the gun buisness in California unless you can find yourself a niche like Ammo Bros.

Thanks for the advice guys, I will search for the 01ffl stuff. As far as opening a full blown gun shop, I do have the space, but I also have a good job that takes up most of my time. Just looking for a sideline and a way to save myself a drive to Sac or Fresno. I am only planing on doing transfers as I don't want to have to maintain any kind of inventory, and the 10x10 room will give me enough room for a desk and a couple of chairs. Internet connection and a phone and i should be in business. Thanks again guys

Maybe you are looking for a small time or starting smith who does transfers as a side line to his smithing work.

Would your rent cover electricity as well (assuming no big power usage appliances/machinery)?

At this point its all negotiable. the real goal is to get an ffl into the area who will transfer OLL's, utilize the space and help a guy who can't find an easily affordable space to opperate a simple business. Due to work constraints I realy can't do it myself, but if someone has the time and energy, it could be a great little business.

hummmm, don't forget the safe/safes... depending on how many transfers you'll do, and how long people will keep their toy there, you may need more than one or two safes...

You bring up a very good point. If you get popular at what you are doing at all you will probably find that you will need a 10x10 room just to store the stuff that you have in the waiting period. I was just having this conversation with Chris from Bright Spot yesterday. He averages somewhere in excess of 600 guns at any given time and has a problem with people leaving stuff for extended periods of time. Think about it for a second, if you are doing PPT's it is not as big of a deal because you DROS it as soon as the two guys come in to do the PPT, however, if you are doing an out of state transfer and the guy has it shipped in to you he may take 2 days to God only knows when to come in and pick it up. Case in point with Chris and myself, I had to stripped OLL receivers sent to him, 3 weeks later had a Saiga sent to him, and then finally got out to see him in another couple of weeks. Before you know it, 6, 8, 10 weeks or so have slid by and in the meantime you are sitting on this stuff. Chris said he has had a few go over a year and in a couple of instances he has had stuff that was absolutely abandoned and after exhausting plenty of time and all avenues of contacting either party he said he made a note about it in the computer and sold the guns. Anyhow, just something else to think about in your 10x10 room.
