plastic cratridges?

while up at my local target shooting place i found a number of plastic shotgun hulls. and was thinking just maybe a single use rifle/pistol cartridge?
i know the pressures are a bit different, but in a fully supported chamber could it work?
my thinking is as a if not available anymore thing making some home made items. like as in for my VZ-52 with it's orphaned cartridge.

any out there with knowledge about such?

Just to clarify, you are talking about cases without brass at the base of the hull, correct?

All plastic hulls have been around for 30-40years that I'm aware of, Active was probably the largest and most common maker here in the states. Wanda and Herter's were some of the earlier manufacturer's. There is a steel washer in the rim of the hull to help keep the rim from being torn during extraction.

yes all plastic. the primer and shot are the only not plastic.

Wow, I didint know any thing like those pca spectrum's were out there...any one try them?

I've tried them. The shoot, but felt a little on the weak side, the powder smelled nasty, and it was more filthy than Russian steel case. Bit they were cheap and shot without ant failures for the few boxes I shot.

I remember about 25 years ago, there were plastic .38 Special cartridges that supposedly could be easily reloaded "at the range" with a simple hand press.

These must be illegal and only for use in those plastic guns that can go through airport metal detectors, shoot heat seeking exploding incendiary bullets, and have the "shoulder thing that goes up".

Thank you for posting the link - I knew this was covered before as I had also read about those exact problems for this ammo. When the ammo came it, it was priced very attractively, which is why people flocked to it. The problems reported is why people ran away from it.

with current polymer technology, the cases could be made cheaper and stronger then the old ones. Many problems seen where the result of a poorly made chamber on the rifle. Problems like firing a 5.56 out of a .223 chamber would be asseverated with a plastic case. As long as you had a good chamber and lead to the bore the polymer case will be good to go. Carbon fiber cases could be made cheaper if the industry focused on it and at a higher production rate then standard bass or steel cases can.
