AK: Bringing the wife around?

Well, after I ordered an AK parts kit (my way of celebrating the Fourth), my wife spring this on me:

She's reading a book written by a former child soldier in Africa. In the book, the "disposables" are given AKs, the people considered worth anything get things like G3s. Her feeling on an AK is "if it's usually given to disposable troops, what's are you saying about yourself for wanting one?"

I'm trying to explain that Mikhail Kalashnikov designed the gun to help save the lives of his buddies. Hasn't helped too much so far.

Any other arguments I can use? I am going to finish this build now that it's started.

The AK is the real 'citizen-soldier' rifle, usable and maintainable by non-specialist part-time soldiers. G3s and such are really nice, and having one of those would also be a good idea - is she proposing an additional purchase?

She just gave you the green light for a nice rifle with 2000 worth of glass. (If I go with anything else, it shows how disposable I am!)

Really though, you're packed with Soviet heat, the Soviet Union saw each and EVERY person as disposable. (The needs of one man is pathetic, the needs of many can spread discord) Just because I and many other people have Comm bloc weaponry (from Mosin Nagant, to SVT-40, SKS, Makarov, CZ-52, AK-47, you name it), doesn't mean we regard ourselves as disposable. Rather, its the people issuing the weaponry whose perceptions are skewed. They don't give a weapon the credit it deserves.

Listen to your wife & get the G-3 clone from CWS. Oh & carry on with the AK build. It'll be a disposable later.

Tell her not to worry her pretty little head about such things and send her off shopping, or give her some ironing to do. You might want to consider changing her reading material as well.

AK prices vary widely. In some countries, they go for $800, other countries, $10, other countries, $3800. The myth that they are all $15 is something that is being spread by IANSA. The average price is several hundred dollars.

Just use your most logical argument. My mother saw a program about Chicago gangsters during the prohibition era (and of course it included some stuff about the Thompson) and when she saw I was interested in a semi-auto PPSH41 clone she went ballistic, spouting off that it could kill massive amounts of people and that it was evil and useless, blah blah blah. I just gently argued that it was semi-automatic, the drum-mag she saw in the picture would be blocked off to ten rounds, the whole shabang. Eventually she loosened up and doesn't really care anymore.

I'd just explain to her that, yes it is disposable. If you ever have to use it to defend yourself or your family the police will take it away while they 'investigate' and you probably won't get it back, so it is in effect a single use item.

Tell her You'll keep the G3 for range use and SHTF.

this is believed by many folks ... ... who never fired an AK!!

But in real life, AK is usually given to poorly trained militias, who usually get no other high tech weapons, no air cover, no artillery support, no reliable supply, no GPS, no nothing, and yet still manage to fight another day.

Agreed - out of all my rifles - if SHTF ever happened - my AK would be my first choice. It's reliable, durable, light and easy to repair.
