doing a little analysis of the source of my gun collection...

I've been buying guns off and on for well over a decade. I sat down with my tracking spreadsheet this morning to fiddle with some valuation numbers and remembered that I had been meaning to do a little analysis on "where" I've bought my guns. The data surprised me a little bit...

    • 27% were purchases from local gunshops
    • 20% were PPT's initiated on Calguns
    • 17% were purchases at gunshows
    • 7% were purchases through Gunbroker or Auctionarms
    • 8% were in-state Calguns vendors
    • 7% were out-of-state Calguns vendors
    • 15% were out-of-state vendors (Davidson's, Budsgunshop, etc)

...now what surprised me was the amount of guns I've bought through gunshops -- I would have guessed quite a bit lower. And as much freaking time as I spend browsing Gunbroker, I assumed that I would have sourced a much larger percentage of purchases from there.

These numbers don't reflect guns I've sold - just an overall snapshop of where I've sourced the guns over the years.

What about the rest of you?

I've never bothered keeping records like that...but if I had to guess I'd say about a quarter come from the classifieds here, half from gunbroker, 10 or 15 percent from gunshows, whether out of state and shipped to my ffl or in state and C&R, and the remaining small percent would be from local shops where I just stumbled on something on their racks I liked.

The only time I kept records was when I had my FFL or my C&R.

Other than that, I don't keep records. It's not necessary.

I have to say that 90% are from local gunshops, and 95% of those were preowned.
