    Permanent firearm storage in trunk

Has anyone considered building a setup for their trunk that could hold a handgun in a holster with mags next to it, or a setup for a rifle with mags?

I think it would be neat to be able to open the trunk and have a setup ready to go if need be.

It's very do-able, but having a firearm in a vehicle, even a black and white vehicle, is an invitation to theft.

My worry would be that the vehicle is going to be out of your sight at some point, and auto-burglary rates being what they are, those firearms are just waiting to be picked up by some a-hole.

In my case, i once lost half a case of 9mm out of my trunk, and the change in the center console to a car-burglar - it could have been worse...

I don't mean to keep the firearm in the car at all times, but I just think it would look cool, if for nothing else than to take pictures of..

If it's just a "set" for a driveway photo session, knock yourself out.

I've seen these demonstrated at gun shows. Might cover your idea.

That truck is very impressive. It leaves my CA-legal effort somewhat lacking:

I've since added an SKS chest rig to hold ammo in stripper clips. Outside CA it's usually an AR -- sometimes an AK or FAL

Wow NiteQwill, that is a VERY nice setup. Way to make us absolutely jealous. May I inquire to how you have those rifles in CA? LEO?

                    This one I quite like.

An SKS is 'enough gun' for most purposes. It's Milsurp, and designed for rough handling. And it's fairly inexpensive, so if it should be stolen, the actual out-of-pocket loss is relatively small.

When my cars stop going onto school campuses regularly, I expect I may do something similar.

For pistols I'd use a locking tool box. Mags and ammo on the bottom, pistol(s), holster on the tray. If someone sees you carrying a tool box our to your car every morning it's far more "Normal" then a riflecase or black metal box.

A locked laptop case works too.

Edit: Also I'd ONLY use detachable magazine firearms for such a plan. Loading a mag tube or revolver takes too long if you need it in a hurry. Is there a toolbox long enough for a folded SU-16?

NiteQwill, where's that at? The reflection in the first picture reminds me of Niland.

Probably. But I use a scooter bag for mine.

From first hand experience, make sure that if you are going to store some firearms in the trunk, that you've got some decent hard cases that'll stand up to abuse. cause while you take care of your firearms, no telling what could happen.

Or in my case getting rear ended by a DUI driver on the freeway and having the contents of the trunk spill out all over the freeway and then the ensuing fun of retrieving stuff as it gets run over... Let's just say the only ones that made it out ok were ones in nice stiff ugly Ruger cases , other pistols were less than fortunate...

I have this in the back of my pick-up. I have a shell on the back and a shelf halfway to hide the contents below. The safe has some "self-tapping bolts through to secure itself on the side. It probably can be pried, but it may not be worth their hassle.
