How Not to Kill My Chrony?

I have been thinking about ways to make sure I don't accidentally shoot my chrony.

Given a rifle that is already sighted in and the chrony on a tripod 10-15 feet in front of muzzle, and shooting from a bench.

Can I use masking tape stuck to the 2 front (downrange) arms and stick a little 1" target dot in the middle of the tape? Granted, the bullet will probably pass below the dot given the scope rise above the barrel, but I will have something that I KNOW is within the risers.

My question is this: will that piece of masking tape interfer with the chrony functions? It would be on the outside of the capture area.

I have no idea, but the if its like mine, with antennae in the front, and back, it measures the timer interval of an object passing the first set of antenna, and subtracts it from the object passing out of the last set of antenna. As long as the tape isn’t passing though the antenna it should not register it. Both antenna stages of mine have plastic bridging them across so they don’t wobble in the wind.

Maybe just leave it sitting for a bit like you said and see if it registers anything?

Why not invest into a laser bore sighter? Point it at the bullseye or target and adjust the chrony to allow the laser to pass through the gates. Done.

Antenna? Those are just wires to give you an idea of the rough area of the field of view of the optical pickups. The issue you might have with the masking tape is if you hit it it could flap and be picked up.

I've been shooting over the same set of skyscreens since 1986 and no one has hit them yet.

Hmmm.... I as always under the (mistaken) assumption that the aerial assembly was required for operation. So, a person could take all of that off and just shoot over top of the base?

Not really. The plastic straps, or screens, are to diffuse light that is going into the electric ''eyes''. The bullet creates a shadow (more like an eclipse) across the eyes. The chrony times the passing of this shadow, and correlates it into feet per second speed.

Direct sunlight blinds the eyes and they cannot see the bullet, hence the screens.

Setup your target. Setup your rifle on the benchrest so you're in the firing position. Pull bolt out. Setup chrony. Look through bore to make sure bore line is centered and above the chrony. If not, adjust crony. Repeat until good.

If AR, just pull the upper off the lower and set up upper in the rest.

If semi auto where you can't bore sight through the bore, just setup chrony so the sights/scope are at or above the copper/bronze colored segments of the rods. If you don't understand what I'm saying here, read the manual that came with the Shooting Chrony. This method is explained there in some form.

My Pact skyscreens don't have diffusers over them and sometimes have difficulty picking bullets in bright sun at mid day.

If you look in the little boxes that the wires come out of you will see a little slot in the top where the sensor looks out.
