How not to clear your handgun

Shot myself in the ankle while unloading my Glock. I was sitting at my computer desk, pointed the gun in between my legs toward the floor. Racked the slide, THEN ,ejected the mag, pulled the trigger, all in less than 1.5 seconds. Had nothing but boxers and a T-shirt on. Muzzle blast burned my leg as well. Grabbed a sweatshirt from my bed and tied it around my lower leg for a tourniquet. Was rushed to the hospital by my sister. Hospital informed police of my GSW."

Why would anyone clear their weapon by racking the slide then dropping the magazine? Why do people feel they have to pull the trigger after clearing their weapon? I was taught to drop the mag, lock the slide back, physically check the chamber, release the slide then place the weapon in storage without pulling the trigger.

Yup, I know someone who did the same thing last year, just a few hours after he inappropriately identified himself as a "firearms instructor" to a class of college students.

Glock leg is not a new thing. Just like SScott said "you can't fix stupid".

I've read more than just one post where a person had an ND by "clearing" their handgun in this fashion. What do they think happens to the round they just chambered?

Gun safety is no joke!!! when ever I go shooting with new shooters i always tell them what my dad told me the first time I went shooting with him "one mistake can take a life make sure you dont make one"

It's mind boggling how little training/knowledge is required for one to own a firearm. Whenever I unload I make sure to rack the slide slowly several times while looking inside the chamber, lock the slide and visually look + stick my finger in there before I rack it forward. It takes no more than 10 seconds but you'll be 100% sure.

If he was preparing to clean it, the trigger must be pulled before the slide can be removed.
XD is the same way.

Some people are paranoid of spring wear when a gun is stored cocked.

Ouch. After breaking my ankle and leg and going through the recovery process, I can tell you this guy's next 3-4 months are going to suck big time.

Looks like he broke all four rules of gun safety at once. He's lucky his lesson only cost him a few months of pain and a couple scars and not his life or someone else's life.

well, when you do something a thousand times, you expect it to go as planned. poor guy just got two of the steps backwards.

this is why im super, duper paranoid about muzzle awareness. because sometimes i do stuff wrong. thats why safety is in layers. please try to remember to be safe, all. it does no good to call somebody stupid or say how much better at guns you are than this guy, just save it please. im sure youre awesome, but i dont need to hear about it.

He's lucky he didn't do more damage or injure someone else. I was reading the manual that came with my new H&K USP... I couldn't believe that the instructions for clearing the weapon were in the manual about 5 or 6 times. Now I know why... But it appears that no matter how many times someone reads what to do, is told what to do, or even knows what to do, whey they let their guard down and fail to respect the weapon and ALWAYS treat it as if it IS loaded, bad things happen.

I was at a known Vacaville guns and stuff store last week to pick up a Colt 1903 I PPT'd. During the safe handling demo from the sales dude, he loads the mag, inserts mag, chambers the dummy round, racks the slide to clear the round, removes mag and then locks back the slide.

I performed the same but with the mag removal before clearing and locking back the slide. I told him that's how it's done.

I think we here of more Glock NDs than others due to the popularity of this semi.
