Is motor oil bad for guns?

I'm not talking about using Mobil-1, which I heard that it was acutally good as a lubricant.

I mean as a way to make sure a gun doesn't rust, is it OK to use good ol' 10weight 30?


I used it this past weekend, and I want to make sure it's OK. Certainly, it's better than that super thin Hoppes oil (the clear one).

Also, I've put it in the bore of my Mosin and drain it after wards and there hasn't been any issue.

I just want to make sure that my normal bluing on other guns will be OK.

I use mobil one. Smells bad but if you consider it is designed to run in an engine at 10 grand and that it has detergents in the oil to break down grime and sludge then it will work in a gun. For the seven dollars you use to buy a quart it will last you a life time if you use that quart only for gun lube. Other gun lubes cost seven dollars for a few ounces and do not have near the development time and money spent in making a quailty oil. Mobil one is all I use. I have had no issues affecting bluing.

As long as you keep it wet it will offer protection and you should be fine. Motor oil is very slippery and will drip right off and your gun will be dry in no time.

Gun oil is basically motor oil with additives to make it smell nicer and gummier so that it sticks to parts.

Dunno about to use as a gun lube but I use motor oil for lubing case to resize.

It seems to coat surfaces better. Of course when I put on the motor oil, I spread it around with a rag/paper towel.

It's only bad if you don't change it every 3,500 rounds or every three months. Make sure to adjust the weight for both winter and summer depending on the climate in your locale if necessary.

We used to use regular motor oil on the M2 in the rain when I was in the army. It didn't wash off in the rain as easily as CLP and it was easy to get enough of it to keep the whole gun covered. Never had any issues with it.

I met this russian guy who claimed he once was in the russian military. They boiled used motor oil and soaked their guns in it to give the guns some bluing. I have not tried that but I would think is would be good on AK's.

When it comes to guns and lubrication you should keep in mind that you need only a very small amount. In other words, it's good to drench the inside of an engine, but not so good to drench a firearm.

I've been using 15W50 for about a year on all of my guns and haven't had any issues. It stays where I put it and isn't to "runny."
