You would think that people that own or work in a gun store would know gun laws, especially if they are selling guns.

I went to Guns, Fishing and Other Stuff in Vacaville this afternoon to pick up a PPT that was eligibal for release. (not my prefered shop, but the seller was kind enough to meet me half way). All was fine with finishing of the transaction.

I decided to purchase a new Colt Defender while I was there and the young guy helping me said I could not DROS it for 30 days. I told him I believe he was misunderstanding the law, as PPT were exempt and did not count in the 30 rule. So you runs down stairs to ask someone else. This other young gentleman who I think was the acting manager, told me the same.
I bet him $100 that I could DROS the pistol. He just said, "Go ahead, it's your $35 when it's declined". I told him to run it.

For the life of me I can't understand why they hire these guys and don't teach them the law. !

I know for a fact that, in at least one city in California, they would be correct. But, given their reputation, I bet you were right.

Guns, FUD, and other BS.
If you bought from their stock, it should be $25, not $35. I have heard of them charging incorrect fees before.

In the future, there is also Center Mass in Vacaville, and they're generally friendlier.

normally gun store clerks are friends kids or related to a owner or something and just need a job. They are non shooters who don't care.

I have told the same guy 3 times only 21+ yr olds can buy a stripped lower. yet each time I visit and hang around the gun counter and some kid walks up and asks about them he says, "it just like any other rifle just doesn't have a barrel" Its like he is programmed to say that. His chosen profession...Heating and Air conditioning. Why does he work in a gun store...brother-in-law owns it. I would hate to see him working a CA gun shop..the AW laws would really get him into trouble.

If they for some strange reason used the dealer sale format then it would come back as a more than one in thirty day violation.

I was thinking the same thing. If they don't know the legal/technical difference between dealer inventory and private party transfer, they might not even know that they're supposed to be DROSed differently.

I was certain to check my first DROS, as I've been around this block before with Canyon. It was logged as a PPT for a used gun.

From the FAQ on the DOJ site
17.What fees can I charge in addition to the DROS?
In addition to the State's $19.00 DROS fee, you must also charge a $1.00 Firearms Safety Testing fee and a $5.00 Safety and Enforcement fee. If the transaction being processed is a dealer sale, consignment return, or return from pawn, you may impose other charges as long as this amount is clearly shown as a "dealer fee" and not misrepresented as a State fee.

So I assume they can add an add'l $10 dealer fee.
