New BATFE regs and the media

In light of the WASHPO article about the "hidden life of guns" and the new ATF regs about reporting two or more purchases of centerfire rifles with detachable magazines, I was wondering if DOJ/ATF co-ordinates with media outlets to push their positions?
I have been seeing more articles and ads for articles (on yahoo this morning) about the "shocking truth about violence in mexico" namely, that it is caused by US gun dealers etc..
This seems like too much of a coincidence. The newspapers prep the public, the Feds come up with new regs, and then the media explains why its a good idea.
I would think there would be some journalistic conflict of ethics here. I wonder if the link can be proven.
This is similar to what W. R. Hearst used to do when he had a newspaper monopoly. Use the media to create public opinion. Of course he was a private citizen.
This instance would involve the government. The whole thing stinks...

Its the ebb & flow of news. There is no conspiracy at hand. Its just news stations picking up on news from another station and putting their own spin on it. As soon as a bigger issue hits, it all goes away.

The danger in the cycle is when a major SHTF situation happens during the up cycle...say a criminal goes crazy at a schoolyard..that starts a knee jerk reaction that gets up chained to legislation.

Even with the Florida incident, we would need a major crime to occur before we had to worry about the Mexico-gun lie effecting us in the form of actual legislation.

The atf is looking at multiple SA firearms purchases nothing more at this time...unless they track illegal sales using that tactic....then expect new rules.
