Last weekend I took the class for my CCW here in AZ, and what passes is very sad indeed. Some of these people should not handle guns until they've at least been on the range a bit, they actually scared me. One was a 3rd grade teacher who had never handled a gun before, and she was borrowing one from the instructor for qualification. She actually did pretty well shooting (I was right next to her in the FL) but she wasn't familiar with any weapon, and I kept my eye on at least 5 of the 12 people there.
The main guy I was watching (for my safety alone, much less any one else's LOL) was a European guy. He actually loaded his glock magazine backwards. That's right, he loaded the top two normally and they went bang, and the next 10 were stacked backwards, and we found out when he had an FTF and the instructor was clearing the weapon. I laughed out loud and wished I had a video camera to film the hilarity. Sad thing was, he actually qualified, mind you, I think it's just a cursory shooting thing and all the state really wants is your money and for you to pass the written test on the law.
My apt. manager at my old place in the PRK told me about people like this, and to be honest, it was hard to accept the fact that even though people have guns, they're not always trained to use them. She really got me thinking about that statement when we discussed CCW issues in CA. She said she didn't agree with people having a CCW until they qualified with the weapon. After this incident, I'm beginning to rethink my thoughts on everyone having a right to buy a firearm without any training whatsoever, especially when the guy next to you is almost sweeping you with his finger on the trigger on a hot range.
What do you think, should you have a range card that says you've been taught to use a firearm safely before you can buy?
I know this sounds like nannyism but after this incident, I think it's a very wise idea that people get trained in the use of their firearms before they buy one, rifle or handgun. I won't like being on the end of a ND because of idiots like this.
