How do you learn about firearms?

Im still young, 19 years old. Ive never held nor fired a real gun before. Before I begin using the gun, I want to learn about them. Inside and out, the same way you'd learn about a car

Are there any links, books, PDF's, videos, anything that I can read or watch online that would teach me about firearms, how they work, their parts, etc?

    Thanks

where in California do you live?

edit- if you live in the east bay area, i would have no problem taking you shooting and teaching you something

Firearms is an incredibly broad topic. You're going to have to be much more specific before we can direct you in the right direction. What specific gun would you like to learn about first?

http://www.m1911.org/m1911dt.htm: This site is terrific for 1911 history, part diagrams, assembly and disassembly, etc.

I got into firearms by watching western movies with my old man. I shot my first rifle when I was ten..... I was hooked!!!! But, I'm also still learning myself man. Always something new to learn!

My father taught me at a young age (12) to shoot and handle guns responsibly.

I always had a fascination with history and mechanics, so naturally I like firearms. The 8 shot BB gun from my grandpa was the beginning. However, my mom planned the collecting seed when I was nine years old, she rented "The Longest Day" from the public library in Lancaster.

Read as much as you can and find a mentor.

Wise man! It is great to read all you can, but you need to find someone who can show you the in's and out's of guns and the safe handling. How to handle a jam, stove pipe, range etiquette etc... Have you thought about going to a Calguns range meet?

The activities are never discussed in public, only in private after the secret handshake greeting is performed.
