Need help with private gun sales process

I bought a S&W M66 3" barrel when the world was coming to an end during Y2K (3/18/1999). I purchased the gun new and it has never been fired.

I am interested in selling it now whether the Mayan prophecies are right or wrong. I am not a gun enthusiast, so I don't understand the process. I would appreciate any help I can get.

You can list it here in the private party marketplace. You pick a price and negotiate with your potential buyers. You meet the buyer at the predetermined transfer place (FFL) and fill out paper work. One of you pays fees, you get the money, they get the gun.

Check with a local gun store about value and the internet. Gun stores low ball you but some take consignments. If you do not do a consignment put on this site for what you think would be a fair price. Gunbrokers.com can give you an idea of what these guns might be going for on the internet. S&W is a good gun and brings a fair price and yours should bring a nice one since it has never been fired. But also remember that if you ever need another gun you certainly will not get it as cheaply in the conidtion yours is and for what you paid for it.

Don't let it go too cheap. A M66 with a 3" barrel is a pretty popular configuration. For whatever reason, Smith isn't currently producing a K-frame .357, so the used market for these is good. And if yours is unfired, it should command a premium. I'd guess $500 would be a reasonable price, perhaps more.

The website gunbroker.com is probably your best bet. Make sure whoever buys it from you:

          1. pays for it
          2. sends you a valid FFL form

This is whom you send the gun to, the address on the FFL. Don't accept requests to ship it somewhere else. More advice is in order, but it can wait until you have the gun listed.

If it were my gun, I would not sell this very collectible piece, but if you do starting at $500.00 is way to low.

The $500 I quoted may be low, but I don't think it's hugely low. Two years ago, I had a shot at a 66-3 PC model (3") in excellent condition for $400. Unless there's something really unique about this one, I don't think $500 is out of line.

Besides, gunbroker is an auction site. If it's underpriced, market forces should work to move the price to an appropriate level.

Thanks for all the information. It looks like the next step is to determine a fair market value. For what it's worth, I've since learned it is a "pre-lock" revolver. I'm happy to hear the process of transfer is so simple.

Might you be planning a trip to Disneyland/SoCal anytime soon?

No trips planned to Disneyland or SoCal any time soon. I didn't realize how important location was to selling a gun, but it makes sense.

I wouldnt sell that gun. $500 is ok, even then its not worth it. That gun could turn into a $1500+ gun by 2020. Stick it away, keep all the boxes and paper.

                        Location is key

And not because what you think it is. First, don't bother with GUNBROKER or any auction sites. Too much hassel and it will take way to much time.

I have the 4 inch model of your weapon....they are in demand.

Just take a few photos of her; in the box, on a carpet..etc...and post a FOR SALE AD here on CalGuns.net

Read the marketplace rules up top.

You will only sell this weapon as a PPT (Private Party Transfer)..that means whoever buys this gun from you will have to meet you at an FFL (Gun Store) in person...face to face....(that is why the Location is important and why a previous post asked if you were coming to Disneyland..hahah..bring the weapon and meet face to face here in Southern California) ..otherwise someone who lives far away and wanted to buy this gun would have to fly or drive up to Clovis....not happening...

So pick out a couple of gun stores close to you; list them in your ad.

I would say that weapon unfired and new in the box (list is as NIB)
would be worth a clean $600.

Mention in your ad that 'Buyer pays DROS and Fees' as well.
(about $35 for the paperwork..they pay. Not you)

Good luck..if you have any questions or need any help writing the ad just PM me. I have no interest in buying this weapon by the way.

If your still interested in selling your gun, PM me your price, I'd be interested in a 3" model 66, I've driven to Fresno to buy a gun before and also visit relatives in Madera. All the best.
