I've heard some talk that when you keep your mags loaded and they just sit around for some time, that the spring gets weak. Is there any truth to that ?

To put it simply, the reverse is actually true. The act of compressing and decompressing the spring is what wears springs out the fastest.

nope....in fact they get weak from the loading and unloading of the mag. I was given a Colt Mustang .380 that had a mag thats been loaded for the last 20years and it works just as good as any new mag you would buy today

Ive read some places of the springs taking a set. What does that mean? FYI I keep mags loaded and dont think it effects anything, Im just trying to figure out what "taking a set" means.

Do the springs on your car wear out when it's sitting in the driveway or when you're driving fast on bad roads?

Nope, I leave my carry guns loaded all the time and extra mags. My other guns I only load the mags when I am at the range. Some factory mags are a little weak. Check around for better ones if your mags fall under this issue.

I talked to an engineer that worked in the spring metal field once, and he assured me that there is no problem leaving them loaded.

That spring in the mag can sit there loaded for years with no problem.
