If you want to shoot pretty much at 100 yards or so, Burris makes a decent compact scope 12-24X. I bought one for about $40 with a small desktop tripod. I use my camera tripod and it works very good. Very clear lenses.

For longer range shooting, I use Kowa TSN821 with 27X LER scope. One of the best you can by for money.

I have the Barska 20-60x50 that I bought at Big 5 for 60 bucks. I'll admit it isn't a quality made scope but it does the job for what I've been using it for.

I can see .223 holes fine out to 150+ yards on a clear day.

Very surprised at this. I couldn't see .223 holes at 200 yards, and couldn't see .22lr holes at 100 on mine. Maybe I just got junk, but I will never buy barska again.

Like I said, the quality wasn't the best, probably not even 2nd best or even a close 3rd.

It is possible that I got lucky and got a decent one and you got a crappy one.

To the OP, if you do decide to go with the Barska, maybe the store will let you check it out in the parking lot before buying it.

My barska works fine at 100 yards as well(the tripod sucks, but that's another story), but I don't doubt for the price there are bound to be some duds. Plus if I were to repeat my spotting scope buying, I'd probably get something else anyway.
