buy a handgun instead... -
i was going to invest in an XD 40 or 45 but after firing my buddy's 40 i didnt like it very much. there was too much snap. i like the heavier 1911 feel. it could just be because im new to firing handguns. im more of a rifle guy. thats why i wanted the ar-10Comment

That depends on what you are exactly asking.
The Armalite AR-10 rifle (for exmaple) is not legal in California. However an Off List Lower chambered in .308 is legal to purchase in California.
The law banned specific manufacturers like DPMS, Bushmaster and Armalite.
Since the law has come to effect there have been new maunufacturers that make .308 lowers like Tactical Machining, CMMG and Noveske.
The answer your second question. No. Having both rifles is not overkill. I am starting mine. The .308 AR can be a very accurate rifle depending on the parts you buy.NRA LIFE MEMBERComment

remember ammo doesnt fall from the gods
Check out the price of ammo, this may help make your decision"Americans have the right and advantage of being armed - unlike the citizens of other countries whose governments are afraid to trust the people with arms." James Madison

I would say the AR-10 platform is great if you are wanting a .308. There are other options out there, but the familiarity of the platform you have with your AR-15 would make it ideal. Keeping in mind prices of ammo, if you want a .308 semi-auto, an Ar-10 isn't a bad way to go. I've shot them many a times and they are great. M1As are also amazing, and I really really love my FAL. Another advantage to the AR-10s is that you can change your caliber as easily as on an AR-15. I'd LOVE to have on in .260 rem.
ETA: i think everyone should have a .308. . . You may not shoot it as often due to ammo prices, but a "badass" AR-15 only LOOKS as such. It doesn't help its function (aside from adding, say, a nice eotech or aimpoint). My AR-15 is simple, but I can hit anything with it. Having a nice .308 semi-auto around is a great addition to any collection.Comment

yea, thats what i was thinking. i just have a stag model 8 with a off brand acog which i recently took off cuz it was getting annoying. i just stuck the regular carry handle on and did some minor adj. anything in 150-200 yards is dead so why bother trying to "pimp my ride" when it still gets from point a to point b.Comment

That is nother thing to keep in mind about building an AR-10. It is not like the Ar-15 ewhere they are mil-spec and any lower will fit any upper.
There are two main types of lowers:
Those that follow the DPMS model and those that follow the Armalite model.
For example, an Armalite upper will NOT fit on a CMMG lower because it follows the DPMS model.
The majority of lowers out there use the DPMS platform including Tactical Machining, CMMG, LMT, Knight's Armament Co., and other I can't remember.
They also use different magazines. Armalite uses a magazine similar to the
M-14 mags.
DPMS has their own version which MagPul makes a compatible polymer mag.
I believe there is a manufacturer that is compatible with FAL mags too.
The more I researched the more I noticed that the majority of manufactureres are going towards the DPMS model.

make sure you can feed that AR 10 with the 308 ammo. While prices have come down I foresee the prices going back up in right about 16 months or so.
The cheaper 308 ammo will be wolf steel case but some ARs don't like shooting steel case so youll be stuck shooting brass. i would get a reloader for your 5.56 AR and get a nice handgun.Comment

i have access to a reloader and many of my buddies shoot some kind of .308 so im not really worried about ammo prices... and i dont see why people are telling me to get a handgun... im obviously trying to figure out what i should do for an ar-10 which is nowhere near the applications of a handgun.. i dont even see how this is popping into your head as a solution to my question.... ever think i might already own a 1911.Comment

Just get the AR10, since you already own a AR15. Now you have to decide which "style" you want. Mine is armalite type and I have a noveske lower on it. If you do a search there are lists of which manufacturers make armalite vs. dpms.
I am really happy with shooting the 308 at Angeles for the longer shots beyond 400yrds. Sure, the ar15 can reach out to 600, but you can't tell if you hit it unless you have a spotter, whereas with the 308, you know!kevin.Comment

I have had both Dpms and Armalite in .308 I have the Armalite. If you have the money buy the Aero lower and Armalite upper. It cost a little more,But you get what you pay for.Comment

yes i am cleryvoiant and I know every gun you have in your housei have access to a reloader and many of my buddies shoot some kind of .308 so im not really worried about ammo prices... and i dont see why people are telling me to get a handgun... im obviously trying to figure out what i should do for an ar-10 which is nowhere near the applications of a handgun.. i dont even see how this is popping into your head as a solution to my question.... ever think i might already own a 1911.
. Buy whatever you want. You asked for opinions and I gave you one. You did not say anything in your OP about having access to reloading for 308 or your buddies shooting 308 and no mention of no worry about ammo prices. Maybe you should give all this information BEFORE you start snapping and barking at people who are trying to simply help you
