Transporting guns to new home in Kentucky

So currently it looks like we're going to use movers for mostly all of our stuff and just drive my mom's car and my truck (?) to Kentucky. The movers will move the empty safe. I have several handguns, and some long guns. If I buy locking rifle cases for them, and put all of the handguns into some locked box in the trunk (unloaded of course) does that constitute the LEGAL transport of the firearms through the various states (southern route) that we will traverse on our way?

I'm still wondering what to do with the ammo too. That is a lot of weight to dump into a trunk.

Just bury them in that big hole you dug, and buy new guns in KY.

Even ignoring FOPA I doubt you'd come close to violating any state laws once you leave CA. Arizona you can carry your loaded gun concealed on your person if you want, Texas you can have a loaded gun in your glovebox, most of the other states you'll pass through are shall-issue, open carry, and used to the fact that ordinary people own guns. The only one you might possibly go through that'd get you any grief would be Illinois, but it's not like you're trying to drive through Chicago. Do whatever you have to in order to comply with CA law and you'll be better than fine.

This is a good book to review traveling with firearms. Of course you'll want the most recent edition and this is available on Amazon.

I believe that you can legally move all your arms and munitions to KY legally in that tunnel you've been digging unless, you screwed up and it goes into Mexico or Canada.

It wasn't a tunnel. It was a trench. A tunnel has a roof!

We all know that was just a cover for your real excavation project.

On your way there take a southern route. If you are moving to northern Kentucky and go through Illinois and Indiana you could have problems. Illinois you need a permit (FOID) to own or possess any firearms. I have heard that you can't drive through Indiana with a handgun as a non-resident.

The City of Denver has also had some issues. They have their own assault weapon and high cap magazine ban. It only applies to residents and not those from the suburbs and the rest of the state. Some of the Denver police have applied it to anyone they come in contact with much like the LAPD seizing "Unregistered" rifles and shotguns.

It is much easier to avoid these areas than to fight to get your guns back.

Sell the ammo here. Use proceeds to buy new ammo in Kentucky. An added benefit will be that your new ammo is less likely to be haunted.

The tunnel makes a wrong turn at Albuquerque.

I called Bud's Gun Shop to ask about re-purchasing the ammo around April 2011 after selling it here in Commiefornia. The person who answered said that yes ... I would be ABLE to get ammo again in Kentucky, "but it will be a lot more expensive after January, and there will be a big new tax on the ammo ... so assuming you are selling it under current market value, you'll only be able to buy about 50% of what you have now, over here, with the money you receive." I am now convinced that I have to move my ammo rather than sell it. I weighed it last night on a digital shipping scale. How many pounds of ammo can a person have before he is "hoarding?"
