    S&W 586 or 686

    I have a chance to buy a S&W 586 or a 686 +P. Please help me with this choice.

My choice would be the 586 unless the 686 +P (7rds ?) is a "pre lock".

If it is, the 686 +P would be my choice.

I like the 686 guns, stainless is SO much easier to deal with, but not so hip on the 7 rounders., Your choice, you can't go wrong with either one.

          whats the difference?

It looks like the difference is that the 586 is a square butt, while the 686 is a round butt. I like the square butt more, but I have 2 686's with round-to-square butt conversion grips.

They made 7 shot, round butt 586's too.

            It's too late, it's over.

I would get the 586, since they are no longer being made.

686, but it was my duty weapon so I'm partial.

                        I sold a 686 to get a 586, so there's another vote.

                        Starting in 1983, I've had a 6" 586, then a 2.5" 686, then a 4" 686 and finally a 4" 586 - all pre lock.

I prefer the 4" 586 out of that group the most.

                        If I ever bought a 686, I'd prefer a 3 or 4 inch CS-1.

The 2.5" 686 ejector rod was too short to extract empties with any authority, so for those that wonder why I'd get rid of such a revolver, that's the reason. My guns have to work 100% of the time and stuck empties didn't cut it.

Depends on if you want a blued gun or a stainless....personally I'd get the 586...I love bluing!

                            586. Black guns are more evil than any other finish.
