    Update on UTAH CCW permits

I called today to check the status of my application and the cranky operator told me that out of state applications are now taking 8 months to process.

She said they are getting hundreds of applications each day, if thats the case why don't they hire more people to process these requests?

They are making some money if they are actually receiving that many applications daily.

They are hiring new people. I spoke to them about 2 weeks ago and the new hires will be on deck in July.

As far as the money they are making, well, recent changes that LOOKED good for BCI may not have been. Up until recently Utah BCI did not get any money directly from permit fees. The fees went directly into the general fund and BCI had an annual budget that they received regardless of how many applications arrived. Then, in the last year, it was changed so that BCI received the monies from the permit fees, but their budget was cut severely. So, they ended up in basically the same place. And in light of the recent shootings in Utah and Virginia the Utah legislature has asked BCI to make sure that resident applications are processed first.

Hopefully, with new employee's being added in July the turn around time for the permits will again be within the 60 day time frame.

Can I ask why a Californian would want a Utah CCW permit? I guess if you visited Utah often, but what is the benefit if you don't?

Its a multi state permit - I think covers 27
Whats the benefit for us here in Cali? None .... I guess its just another thing to have - but yes is handy if you travel.

Edit: Also if more people carried out of state permits.. this could possibly be used as an argument to help obtain CCW's here in Cali. Not saying you can use that as a reason you would/should qualify for a CA CCW

Thanks for the details - makes sense these are processing the in state residents first.

My pleasure. I know that it's frustrating waiting. The good news is that it appears PA has added UT as a state that they will recognize. That adds one more state to the list. Now the only reason to get the FL permit is if you plan on carrying in FL.

The NV legislature passed a bill last month that would establish reciprocity between NV and other states. The Governor has not signed the bill yet, but from what I understand if it was not signed or vetoed it would become state law by the 15th. So, now they have until October to come up with a list of states whose CCW permits NV will recognize. Hopefully Utah and/or Florida will be among them.

                    Nevada reciprocity bill signed

The Nevada reciprocity bill was signed into law by the governor on June 15th. It takes effect October 1st of this year. I'll be anxious to see if they include Florida non-res permits.

                      Yes!!!

I spoke with the Nevada Department of Safety and they are meeting to discuss it in a couple of days. They will have a list of States by July 1, 2007. The nice person there will call me back and let me know if the Utah or Florida permits will be accepted.

She said thta permist with the same or more stringent qualifications will have reciprocity. If I remember correctly there WAS a live shooting proficiency with the Florida permit but NOT the Utah therfore I'm guessing that the Florida permit will have reciprocity and the Utah will not.

Congratulations! It looks like things are moving again with the 3 new employees that Utah BCI hired JUST to process applications. They are now processing apps that they received April 23, 2007 for non-residents and June 02, 2007 for residents of Utah.
