    Help this Canuck decide

So I've got a couple of options in front of me. I'm currently looking for a "black rifle" in .223 as it's the only category of firearm I'm currently without.

There are a couple of routes that I can take. I've got it nailed down to either a full-meal-deal AR, Benelli MR1 or HK SL8.

Here's the problem. The AR platform is restricted in Canada. It's considered a "restricted firearm", which means that I could only shoot it at approved ranges. The range that I'm a member of is indoor (which is nice when it's cold out), but it's only a 50 meter lane.

There is only one other range within a reasonable driving distance of where I live that I could shoot the AR at. It's a full 1000 Meter range, but there's also a 5 year waiting list to join.

On the other hand, both the MR1 and SL8 are considered "non-restricted" which means there are zero restrictions on where I can take or shoot it. I could take it camping or shooting in the bush. Hell, I could drive around with it in the city if I wanted to...

I can say without a doubt that I can and would use a "non-restricted" rifle far more then I would a "restricted".

So, given the circumstances, what would you go with? My only hesitation about the MR1 or SL8 is that they aren't "true" AR platforms, and that's what I really want.

    SIG Black Special:

Wolverine Supplies is your destination for firearms, ammunition, sporting goods, and outdoor gear. Quality products for hunters and sport shooters

    It's pricey, though.

Also, have you signed up to

Canadian firearms and guns news. Canadian gun owners community. Canadian new and used firearms market place and classifieds.

Probably a better spot to solicit info.

      That's an option, for sure.

      Yes, I'm a member of both CGN's.

Non-restricted certainly sounds better than restricted.

Is a converted Saiga .223 in the restricted category by the way?

As someone with both "restricted" aka BB 10 round AR's and "unrestricted" M1A's rifles, there's something to be said for less hassles.

Don't get me wrong, working within the rules to get what you REALLY want is great, but there is something to be said for getting something you can use on a more regular basis.

Of course I'll always fall back on the ever popular position of "get both"

if you already possess a variety of firearms of the unrestricted category why not take a trip on the DarkSide, if that's what you really want? It can be your special friend.

If you want a "restricted" rifle, get a IWI Tavor!

                  FYI.
H&K has discontinued the SL8 series of rifles.

Is a HK 416 considered an AR?
