    storage of firearms in attic

I need to store some rifles and AR uppers in the attic for a while. It is not temperature or humidity controlled, but they are in bore store socks and I would be able to oil them monthly. Are there any other precautions I should take? What kind of storage container would you recommend?

I looked through the house and see one good spot for an in-the-wall safe, but those would only hold 1-2 rifles. I do have a safe, but it is full and there is no room for another.

    Thanks for your advice.

Well the temperature shouldn't be too much of a problem considering how much hotter guns get during firing.

But I would at least try to put them in some kind of container with a dessicant because depending on how well your attic is ventilated, the moisture could be a major issue. Doesn't even have to be a safe, maybe a footlocker or something like that.

Well oiled in Bore Stores w/ dessicant paks should be good if your roof is tight!
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

The wood can dry out in the heat over time. If any have wood stocks.

Not only can the wood dry out but it may warp. If there are any rubber or plastic pieces on the firearms they may get brittle from the baking heat. Attics can get amazingly hot in the summer in SoCal and damp in the winter.

You should probably also consider wrapping them in trash bags and tapeing them sealed. Its no fun getting insulation into your gun because it sticks to the oiled surfaces and is a major pain to clean out of those hard to reach places.

Not sure where you're located, but guessing the attic isn't going be freezing or baking hot.

Guns are pretty tough. If you've got them in a bore store, and then an inexpensive case, you're probably going to be fine. Oil 'em up and check 'em every month.

I'd be more worried about theft, but I guess you could put them in a big box marked Baby pictures or Xmas tree ornaments.

I know a guy who had some guns burried for 7 years out in the boonies, YOu know one of those The worlds gonna end people.... Any ways i was there when he finally dug them up he had put a fair amount of petrolium jelly on all the metal parts, blued, nickle, stainless.. anything metal. Then he put tube socks over them, and wrapped them tightly in plastic trash bags. Once we wiped them down we shot them and it was like they had just came out of a safe. So if you dont mind cleaing up a bit I would suggest this.

Maybe you could install an attic fan that has a thermostat.

An attic is just about the worse place you can pick, with the garage being a close second. If you like your firearms find a place indoors. Temperature stability is the key. Build a false back to an indoor closet, that won't take up much space. Good luck.

Seriously though, I agree with russ69. Interior closet, false wall or wall cavities.

If the attic is your only option, cheaperThanDirt items# BAG-097 & #BAG-198, might be useful

                              Store them:
                              In a box spring
                              In an interior wall
                              Under the couch
                              In a hide a bed
                              Far back of a closet
                              Behind a mirror
                              Behind fridge
                              Behind dresser
                              Behind kickboards of counters

                              Just a few ideas
